Women's Basketball opens KCAC slate this week hosting Friends Wednesday, Evangel Saturday

Kansas Wesleyan Women's Basketball opens the KCAC portion of the 2023-24 season this week with two home games against Friends and Evangel inside Mabee Arena.

THE SERIES  
  • The Coyotes have won two straight and nine of 11 against Friends. They swept the Falcons last season winning 68-62 in Mabee Arena on November 22 and 70-57 January 23 in Wichita. Friends has a 20-18 edge since 2006. 
  • KWU is 2-0 against Evangel winning 69-59 in a game in November, 2018 in Atchison and 78-62 November, 2021 in Mabee Arena. 

KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE 
  • The Coyotes lost to No. 16 Dakota State 68-47 Saturday in Madison, S.D. DSU led by 18 early in the third quarter before KWU rallied and cut the deficit to one twice late in the game. Jill Stephens had 15 points and nine rebounds and Daijane Adams points 12 for the Coyotes who have victories over Bellevue and Oklahoma City. 
  • Stephens is the leading scorer (10.0) followed by LaMyah Ricks (9.7) and Hampton Williams (9.2). Williams also averages 4.5 rebounds and Stephens 4.4.  
  • KWU averages 70.2 points and is shooting 40 percent from the field, 27 percent from 3-point range. Opponents average 71.7 points and are shooting 45.3 percent. 

FRIENDS AT A GLANCE 
  • The Falcons lost to Hastings 73-47 in their opener, defeated Barclay 90-31 and defeated Oklahoma City 72-6 on the road last Saturday. Rayland Garner had 26 points and Taylor Jackson 16 and 10 rebounds against Oklahoma City. 
  • Garner averages 19.7 points and 5.0 rebounds, Kori Babcock 13.7 points and Jackson, the Falcons' post player, averages 10 points and 11.7 rebounds. 
  • Friends averages 69.7 points and is shooting 39 percent overall, 28 percent from deep, and have a plus-8.7 rebounding advantage. Opponents average 57.3 points. 

EVANGEL AT A GLANCE 
  • The Valor opened the season with a 74-58 homecourt victory over John Brown then lost to Mid-American Christian 86-58 last Saturday in Oklahoma City. 
  • Evangel is the newest member of the Kansas Conference. Wednesday's game against Tabor will be their first game against a fellow KCAC opponent. 
  • Carson Dillard averages a team-best 11 points with Jazzy Kirby next at 8.5 points. Evangel is averaging 66 points and shooting 37 percent, 25 percent beyond the arc, through its first two games.
