The Kansas Wesleyan Athletics Department is proud to announce the Sports Media Team. We are looking to build a team that consists of 20+ students who work in the KWU Sport Information Office and handle all gameday operations as well as day-to-day activities.
 

Scholarships are available for the Sports Media Team!

Students who are interested in broadcasting, photography, social media management, gameday/event operations, graphic design, journalism, facilities management, videography, or just have a love of college athletics are encouraged to apply for a Sports Media Scholarship.

Individuals selected to the Sports Media Team will have the opportunity to earn both merit based and athletic scholarships while engaging in hands-on experience as they progress through the program.

Any student is welcome to join the team, but special consideration will be given to students who enroll in Graphic Design, Photography, Communications, Public Relations, English, and Sports Management areas of study to fully complement the hands-on experience students will receive as a member of the team.

Here are some of the positions that are available within the Sports Media Team. This is not a complete list. If you have an interest that's not listed, contact us, we can discuss!
 

Broadcasting (On-Air Talent): Who wants to be the next Joe Buck, or Kevin Harlan? In this role, you would serve in many capacities, such as play-by-play broadcaster, color analyst, show host. You’ll hone your skills as a play-by-play broadcaster. Color analysts provide insight to help viewers understand the game (think Tony Romo). Show hosts prepare for interviews and host pregame, postgame and other shows with coaches and students. All positions can overlap.

Writing: Tell the story in words. In this role, you’ll learn the skills to be an effective writer, using what you’re learning in the classroom, along with real-life skills to become a great writer. Game previews, season previews, game recaps, features, season reviews are all examples of what you’d be working on. You’ll have a great mentor in former Salina Journal sports editor Bob Davidson.

Graphic Design: In this role, you’ll help out with graphic design for the department, whether that’s things to use online, printed pieces, or other elements. This position will use graphic design software within the Adobe Creative Suite to produce eye-popping graphics to promote KWU athletics.

Producing and Directing Live Events: In this role, you’ll learn to use industry standard equipment to produce a live sports event, or event on campus. This will include setting cameras and camera angles, and producing the game, with replays, and other elements that provide a first class experience.

Producing and Directing Preproduced Events: This role is similar to live event production, but you’ll be doing it for a piece to be premiered later. This would include hype videos, highlight videos for games and a full season, video features, interviews, etc. You would work within a video editing software to produce a video that helps promote our brand.

Public Address Announcing: From NORTH CAR-OL-I-NA… Be the voice on the microphone. In this role, you’ll be the voice in the stadium or arena. You’ll learn professional skills to become a public address announcer, following scripting, adapting written communication into the spoken word and how to provide the information you need to provide, while still being able to put your own spin on it. 

Game Host: Do you yearn to be the center of attention? Then this role fits you. You’ll be the game host, working with promotions and game operations to enhance the game day experience. There’s also many other opportunities for a person in this role.

Camera Operator: Do you have an eye for action? In this role, you’ll serve as a camera operator for live events. You’ll work directly with the game producer to capture scenes in the event to make a top-notch product for those watching.

Statistics: The numbers behind it all. You’ll learn how to run several different types of statistics software, all industry standards, like DakStats, Stat Crew and Presto Stats. You’ll learn the method behind the madness too, how to interpret what happens, and correctly enter it into the software. You’ll learn the proper statistics methods in all sport so that the numbers you get are accurate and correct. There’s multiple positions available in this role, including inputter and spotters.

Table Crew: The game can’t function well without a great staff running it. In this role, you’ll learn how to run the scoreboard and shot clock, keep score, and other operations. This also includes being the music manager, which interacts directly with fans to provide an outstanding game atmosphere. That role would be responsible for playing music to match the situation and working with the band and spirit squads.

Photography: Capturing the moment. This role will use high quality equipment to document games through photos, whether it’s action shots, fan shots, or just documenting the happenings of the day. Photography is key to telling the story and providing a historical record. You’ll take what you learn in photography classes and be able to apply it in real life situations.

Social Media Manager: Social Media is a huge part of communication any more with Twitter, Facebook, Instgram, etc. In this role, you’d develop a Social Media plan, for providing content and interaction. You’d also be responsible for in game updates and promotion of events on various platforms.

Videography: Documentation through video. A bit different that camera operators at a game. This role would be responsible for capturing the game day experience from a different angle. You’d be capturing all angles of a game, from on the field action, to fan engagement, to interviews, to features. The intent of this role is to go beyond the game footage role to provide a more personal view of events.

Game Operations: This role would work directly with the game operations manager to assist with the operation of the game. This includes set-up and tear down, helping with promotions, officials’ liaisons, ticket sellers and takers, ushers, and the other roles that make a game work.
