The Kansas Wesleyan defense tossed a perfect game, as the Coyotes handed the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies their first loss of the season 1-0 on Monday night at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.
The victory was the first of the season for the Coyotes, who improved to 1-1 with the win, also earned the first win for first-year coach
Joe Schwartz of his Kansas Wesleyan tenure.
Wesleyan had a couple early chances on shots by
Sara Wall in the second minute and
Yissel Navarro in the 18th.
The Coyotes finally broke through in the 34th minute as
Rylie Moreno-Rojas scored her first goal of the season. After an initial shot by
Precious Nwosu, Moreno-Rojas found herself in the right spot to gather the loose ball and score it to give the Coyotes the lead.
After that, Panhandle State dropped back into full defensive mode, at times with six players on the back line, limiting KWU's scoring chances.
Wesleyan didn't slow down the tries, tallying 20 total shots in the match, eight on frame.
Meanwhile, Wesleyan's defense did not allow a shot to OPSU the entire night.
The Coyotes nearly had another goal in the 86th minute as Nwosu broke through, but two quick shots were blocked and another by
Graciela Lopez was also blocked by the OPSU back line.
Leoni Enzlmuller's shot was saved.
Nwosu led the Coyotes with six shots, three on frame, while Navarro had four.
The Coyotes are back in action again on Saturday, taking on College of Saint Mary, with a scheduled 1 p.m. kickoff in Omaha, Nebraska.
