Men’s Soccer opens season with 3-1 win over Panhandle State

Two quick goals by the Kansas Wesleyan Men's Soccer team fueled the Coyotes to a 3-1 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State in Monday's season opener at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.
 
Wesleyan's first goal came in the 13th minute as Mika Wernicke scored off a set piece off an assist by Jesue Moreno following a foul by OPSU.
 
Just 30 seconds later the Coyotes scored again as Moreno converted a penalty to make it 2-0 in favor of the Coyotes.
 
In the 18th minute, OPSU had a golden chance at a goal as KWU keeper Ronald Gonzalez came out to play a ball that got loose in the box and Juan Balbin had a look at a wide open goal and missed the shot left.
 
Wesleyan nearly had another goal in the 33rd but Kenneth Luanlatbandith's shot hit the crossbar and bounced out of play.
 
KWU led 2-0 at the half.
 
Things got a little heated in the second half between the teams as 14 cards were issued in the second 45, included a direct red for violent behavior by a OPSU player.
 
OPSU scored in the 55th minute on a penalty conversion by David Rubio that made it 2-1 Coyotes.
 
The Coyotes capped the scoring in the 73rd, as Sebastian Fernandez scored off an assist by Jorge Arevalo making it 3-1 Coyotes. The goal came on a free kick following an OPSU foul.
 
The Aggies outshot the Coyotes 11-10 in the match. KWU had seven shots on frame. Moreno led the way with three. Ronald Gonzalez had three saves in goal for the Coyotes in the first half. Andrew Cole played the second half between the pipes.
 
Wesleyan is back in action on Thursday, hosting the Doane University Tigers at 8 p.m. at JRI Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.
