Kansas Wesleyan Women's Volleyball snapped a four-match losing stream on Saturday as the Coyotes picked up straight-set wins over Culver-Stockton and Haskell at the Kansas Wesleyan Volleyball Coyote Classic at Mabee Arena.
The victories push Wesleyan's record to 8-7 overall heading into Wednesday's KCAC opener when the Coyotes host Sterling at 7 p.m. in Mabee Arena.
Against Culver-Stockton the Coyotes trailed late in the opening set 23-19 to the Wildcats, but Wesleyan quickly turned things in their favor, scoring the next three points to get within one at 23-22 on a kill by
Kylee Harris. After a point by CSC, the Coyotes scored the next three points to take a 25-24 lead on a block by
Sarah Girard and
Gianna Adriaanse.
After a Culver point, the Coyotes closed it out on back-to-back kills by Adriaanse to take the set 27-25.
Wesleyan rocketed out to a 9-1 lead in the second set and Culver never recovered.
Kyla Moore's kill made it 22-12 in favor of the Coyotes and
Eden Schilder closed it out with a kill in the set.
KWU led 5-1 to start the third, and led 9-2 in the set. The Coyotes led 13-8 when Culver rolled off four straight points to get within a point at 13-12. The Coyotes pushed the lead back up to 19-14 before Culver again got within one at 19-18. Schilder's kill made it 24-21 Coyotes, but Culver scored the next three to tie it at 24. Schilder got another kill and
Rylee Serpan ended it with a kill.
The freshman Adriaanse had 13 kills to lead the Coyotes, while Serpan added 11. KWU hit .310 as a team. Schilder added eight kills and Harris had six.
Josie Deckinger led the Coyotes with 28 assists, and
Marti Strickert had 10.
Kelcey Hund had 18 digs.
KWU later faced Haskell and picked up the straight set win. Haskell led the first set 7-3 and later led 12-7 when the Coyotes came roaring back scoring the next five to tie things up at 12-all. Haskell led 14-12 when the Coyotes rattled off three straight capped by Deckinger's kill to make it 15-14 Coyotes. Haskell tied it, but another Deckinger kill gave KWU a 17-15 lead. It was 20-18 Coyotes when KWU got fire, scoring the last five points to take the set 25-18.
Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead in the second but Haskell got back in it, tying things up at 12-all when the Coyotes took over. Five straight, capped by Adriaanse's kill got things in control for the Coyotes, as they came away with the 25-16 in in the set.
It was 9-7 Coyotes in the third when KWU rattled off six straight points to take a 15-7 lead. KWU led 16-10 when they scored four more to make it 20-10, and
Megan Peeler's kill closed out the match.
Harris led the Coyotes with nine kills, while Decking had eight from the setter position, along with 23 assists and nine digs. Hund had 18 digs and
Kori Arnold added 11. Arnold also had four aces.
