Kansas Wesleyan University continued KCAC play Saturday afternoon where they faced off against the University of Saint Mary Spires at Mabee Arena on the campus of KWU. The Coyotes fell to the Spires 3-0 as the USM Spires won 25-23, 25-22, 25-21.
The first set saw KWU out to a hot start with a 7-1 lead after a run of kills by
Gianna Adriaanse. The Spires would find a run of their own in a set that was a story of runs. Despite the runs, KWU held the lead of this set most of the way, leading 23-21 after the kill by
Kylee Harris. Saint Mary capitalized on KWU attack error and used that as momentum to then tie, take the lead along with the first set closing it out with a Spire kill by Emma Murphy to score 25-23.
Heading into the second set, USM found themselves in a similar hole as first set down 7-3 this time thanks to a Coyote kill by
Kate Bebout. KWU again found themselves out front but the Spires' 7 point run allowed Saint Mary to take the lead at 16-13. The Spires continued to stretch the lead regardless of the Coyotes efforts. USM kept set two at arm's length and won the set 25-22 maintaining the lead and putting the score at 2-0.
Set three had a similar story where USM found an early lead and kept KWU at bay and found a run for themselves overtime the Coyotes strung some points together. The Spires held on and secured the third set at 25-21 to win the game 3-0.
Kansas Wesleyan falls to 10-9 overall and 2-3 in KCAC play.
The Coyotes will stay in Salina and have a non conference match up against Baker University (9-6 overall) on Tuesday, October 8th at 7:00PM in Mabee Arena.
