FORT WORTH, Texas – Kansas Wesleyan Softball split two games against Texas Wesleyan and Central Baptist College on Thursday. KWU defeated Texas Wesleyan 4-3 in nine innings, and dropped a 7-4 game to Central Baptist.
Against Texas Wesleyan, the Coyotes prevailed in nine innings for the 4-3 win.
Texas Wesleyan got on the board first taking advantage of a leadoff triple in the first inning to later score a run and take a 1-0 lead after an inning.
The score would remain the same until the fifth when
Hailey Summers hit a solo homer to lead off the frame and tie things up.
In the sixth, the Coyotes took a 2-1 lead after
Trenity Miller singled and then pinch runner
Lisandra Andrade scored on
Keira Hammen's sacrifice fly.
Texas Wesleyan tied it up in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single.
Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
With the tiebreaker rule in effect, the Coyotes moved runner
Josie Buhr to third with a sacrifice, then
Eliza Flores singled to bring in the run.
The Rams tied it up in the bottom of the inning, getting a leadoff bunt single to put runners on the corners and another single brought in the tying run. TWU had a chance to win in with two runners in scoring position, but a pop out would lead to a double play to end the inning.
In the ninth, the Coyotes scored again with
Jocelyn Alcala as the runner, pinch hitter
Jenna Soule sacrificed Alcala over, then Summers drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly putting the Coyotes up 4-3.
Texas Wesleyan sacrificed their runner over in the bottom of the inning, but a pop out and a lineout would end it and the Coyotes grabbed the win.
Miller had three of KWU's seven hits in the game.
Halley Asbury picked up the win in relief, pitching the final four innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts. Starter
Caitlyn Collier went five innings allowing a run on four hits with eight strikeouts.
The error bug got the Coyotes in the Central Baptist game in the 7-4 loss.
KWU committed four errors in the first inning, but only allowed one run.
In the bottom of the first, the Coyotes took the lead as Buhe led off with a walk, Flores doubled and then Miller hit a 3-run homer to put the Coyotes up 3-1.
In the second, CBC took the lead back with three runs, all coming across after an error in the inning.
Wesleyan tied it in the bottom of the third with a RBI double by Miller after
Sydnee Fordham led off with a double, but CBC took the lead in the fourth on a homer, and added two more in the fifth to grab the win.
Miller drove in all four runs for the Coyotes and had three of KWU's nine hits while Fordham had two.
Miranda Fogal took the loss allowing seven runs, only three earned, on four hits in six innings with four strikeouts.
Alli Mickelsen went one inning with two strikeouts and a hit allowed.
Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday in the home opener, hosting Cottey College at 1 p.m. at Salina South High School.
