THE SERIESÂ
- KWU has won three in a row and nine of the last 10 against Saint Mary including a 71-64 victory December 9 inside Mabee Arena. The Coyotes are 6-11 in the Ryan Center since December, 2005 but have a 19-17 overall advantage during that time.
- Wesleyan has won four consecutive games against Southwestern including a 96-92 victory January 3 in Winfield. The Moundbuilders had won five of six before that. The Coyotes are 11-8 at home against Southwestern since January, 2006 but trail the overall series 20-19 during that span.Â
KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
- The Coyotes trounced rival Bethany 82-60 last Wednesday in Lindsborg in their lone game of the week. Their contest against Ottawa on Saturday in Mabee Arena was postponed until February 19. Gabe Phillips continued his strong play of late with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Bethany – both career bests. Izaiah Hale added 16 points and nine rebounds. KWU shot 52.3 percent (33 of 62) and 12 Coyotes reached the scoring column.
- Jun Murdock had 21 points and seven rebounds and Alex Littlejohn 16 points and 13 rebounds in KWU's victory over Saint Mary earlier this season. The Coyotes limited Saint Mary to 34.3 percent shooting and won the rebounding battle 42-34. Littlejohn dominated in the first game against Southwestern finishing with 31 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Murdock added 18 points and Easton Hunter 17.
- Murdock averages 17.3 points, 4.9 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.9 steals. Littlejohn is sixth in the NAIA with 10.9 rebounds per game, averages 16.3 points and is shooting 55.3 percent from the field. Izaiah Hale averages 10.8 points and Thurbil Bile 9.8 and 5.0 rebounds. Â Â
SAINT MARY AT A GLANCE
- The Spires are on a roll having won their last two games and six of their last seven. They defeated Bethel 67-60 Wednesday in Leavenworth and Friends 67-60 Saturday in Wichita. Their only loss in the last seven was to Oklahoma Wesleyan 76-64 February 3 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
- Deshaud St. Martin had 15 points and seven rebounds and Mason Belcher scored 11 off the bench in the first game against KWU. The Coyotes led 33-21 at halftime and held on for the victory.
- St. Martin, a senior forward, leads the Spires in scoring (14.3) and rebounding (7.1). He had 16 points against Bethel and 14 against Friends. Junior guard Joey Schultz averages 10.3 points and is shooting 54 percent from the field. Â Â Â
SOUTHWESTERN AT A GLANCE
- The ninth-ranked Moundbuilders defeated Bethel 97-89 Saturday in North Newton, rebounding from a 70-68 homecourt loss to No. 4 Oklahoma Wesleyan last Wednesday. Southwestern had won eight in a row prior to the OKWU setback.
- Cevin Clark had 22 points, Mason Thiessen 21, and Jarvin Jennings 19 in the first game against KWU. Southwestern trailed 57-46 at halftime but made it close the second half. Â
- Clark, a senior guard, leads the NAIA in scoring with a 27.1 average while shooting 48.4 percent from the field, 37.4 percent from long distance, and 85.4 percent from the foul line. He scored 19 against OKWU, 29 against Bethel and has tallied 30 or more seven times this season. Junior guard Justin DeMaria averages 12.5 points and junior guard Andrew O'Brien 10.4. The Moundbuilders average 89.5 points and outrebound their opponents by 12 per game.
