THE SERIESÂ
- Saint Mary defeated the Coyotes 59-55 on December 9 in the first game this season. The loss ended KWU's eight-game winning streak against the Spires. The Coyotes have a 25-10 advantage in the series since December 2005.
- It has been all KWU of late against Southwestern, the Coyotes winning the last 11 games. They defeated the Moundbuilders 81-68 in the first meeting January 3 in Winfield and have a 24-17 lead in the series since January 2006.Â
KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
- The Coyotes defeated rival Bethany 57-56 Wednesday in Lindsborg in their only game last week. Their game against Ottawa on Saturday in Mabee Arena was postponed until February 19. Hampton Williams had 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench while LaMyah Ricks had 11 points and seven rebounds. The victory was the third in a row and fourth in the last five games against the Swedes.
- Williams, a former Salina Central High School standout and transfer from Abilene Christian, is regaining her form after missing 10 games with an injury earlier this season. She scored 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting that included 3 of 5 from long distance against the Swedes. Wednesday's contest was her fifth game back since the injury and has scored 23 points in her last two outings.
- Jill Stephens scored 15 and Cat Bowman 11 in the first game against Saint Mary. Daijane Adams had 19 points and nine rebounds and Stephens 16 points and eight rebounds in the first game against Southwestern.
SAINT MARY AT A GLANCE
- The Spires' five-game winning streak ended Saturday in a 61-54 loss to Friends in Wichita. Nonetheless, USM has won 10 of its last 12 and 17 of 20. The Spires are 10-1 in the Ryan Center this season – the loss 65-63 to Tabor on January 20.
- USM is outscoring the opposition by an average score of 73-63. The Spires collectively shoot 40.4 percent, 32.7 from 3-point range and have a plus-4 rebounding advantage. Opposing teams are shooting 36 percent, just 29 percent beyond the arc.
- Senior forward Tanea Sims averages a team-best 14.7 points and 9.7 rebounds. She scored 13 in the first game against KWU this season and is shooting 55 percent from the field, 47.6 percent from deep. Junior guard Alanis Degado averages 11.7 points, senior guard Paige Pendley 11.7 points and freshman guard Kelly Barnard averages 10.8 points. Â
SOUTHWESTERN AT A GLANCE
- The Moundbuilders entered the week seeking their first victory of the season. They lost to Bethel 81-54 Saturday in North Newton and 85-72 to Oklahoma Wesleyan last Wednesday in Winfield.
- Southwestern averages 57 points and allows 79. The Moundbuilders are shooting 32 percent overall, 25.7 percent from long distance, are being outrebounded by 8.1 per game and average 20 turnovers.
- Senior forward Christy Wiebe leads the team in scoring (11.2 points) and rebounding (8.7). Freshman guard Kennedy Ford is next on the scoring list (9.4). Sophomore guard Macey Pond had 18 points in the first game against KWU.
