Softball splits with Cottey

NEVADA, Mo. -- Kansas Wesleyan Softball split with Cottey College on Tuesday at Vanek Field. KWU won the first game 2-1, and Cottey got a 10-0 win in the second game.

In the first game, it was a pitcher's duel until the Coyotes broke through in the top of the fifth.

Jocelyn Alcala led off the inning with a single, followed by Anne Thibert reaching on a bunt single, and moving the third base on a Cottey throwing error that also allowed Alcala to score. Pinch hitter Eliza Flores then singled to bring in Thibert.

Cottey got a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was all the Comets could do.

The Comets put a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh with a double, and another runner to first on a single giving the Comets first and third with no one out. Pitcher Miranda Fogal struck out the next batter and the game ended on a double play from the outfield.

Buhr and Alcala had two hits each for the Coyotes. Fogal got the win going the distance in the circle allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts and six walks.

Game 2 did not go well for the Coyotes.

Cottey hit three homers on the way to the 10-0 win.

The Comets scored twice in the first, again in the second, four times in the fourth and ended it in the fifth with three more runs.

The Coyotes were held to two hits.

Halley Asbury suffered the loss allowing seven runs, three earned, on six hits.

The Coyotes are back in action this weekend at Baptist Bible College.
