McPHERSON – Kansas Wesleyan Men's Volleyball stepped back into Great Plains Athletic Conference action on Tuesday, taking on the Central Christian Tigers and the Coyotes came away with a straight set sweep 25-4, 25-16, 25-11 inside Jerry Alexander Arena.
The Coyotes hit .417 for the match against the Tigers with 32 kills against seven errors in the match.
Wesleyan bolted out to a 14-2 start to the first set and never looked back, extending the lead out to 21-3 on a kill by
Justin Burras. After a Central point, the Coyotes finished off the set with four straight to win 25-4.
KWU led 7-3 in the second set, but Central came back and tied it at 7-all. A kill by
Zayin Martinez stopped the Central run as the Coyotes took a 10-7 lead and pushed it out to 15-9 on a service ace by
Barry Neff, Jr.
KWU led 20-13 before two Tiger points, and then the Coyotes closed the set scoring five of the last six points.
Wesleyan again jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third only to see the Tigers rally and get back within a point. The Coyotes pushed the lead out to 13-6 and after a pair of Central points took the lead out to 17-8 on
Tyler Vanderplas' service ace. Six more for the Coyotes made it 23-9 and after two Central points the Coyotes closed it out with a kill by
Cooper Stepp and a block by
Viet Nguyen and Stepp.
Martinez and Nguyen led the Coyotes with six kills each.
Tyler McUne had 12 assists, and
Angel Diaz had 10.
Jose Pina-Garcia had 10 digs.
Wesleyan is back in action on Thursday, hosting William Penn University at 6 p.m. in Muir Gym. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved to Thursday because of the NAIA Basketball First and Second Rounds being hosted by KWU this weekend.
