Men’s Volleyball picks up win over Central Christian in four sets

McPHERSON – Kansas Wesleyan Men's Volleyball faced the Central Christian College of Kansas Tigers on Tuesday evening at Jerry Alexander Arena, and the Coyotes came away with a four-set win 25-12, 25-12, 24-26, 25-10.
 
The Coyotes had a successful evening playing a majority of reserve players in the match.
 
It was 7-6 in the opening set in favor of the Coyotes when KWU pushed out to an 11-7 lead. Central answered back with four straight to tie things up at 11-all, forcing a KWU timeout.
 
KWU scored the next point and then Central tied it up again at 12-all. That was the last point Central scored in the set. KWU ran off the next 13 started by a Cooper Stepp service ace and capped by a Tyler Vanderplas kill to win the set 25-12.
 
In the second set, the Coyotes led 14-9 before running off eight straight points to take a 22-9 lead in the set on Brayden Johnson's kill. It was 23-12 Coyotes when KWU ran off the last points of the set to win 25-12.
 
The third set went back and forth as Central built a 7-4 lead but the Coyotes came back and tied it 8-8 on a CCC error. Central scored the next two points only to see the Coyotes bounce right back and tie it up. Central led 16-14 when the Coyotes scored three straight to take a 17-16 lead. The Tigers took the lead back at 23-21 before the Coyotes had three straight points to give KWU match point try at 24-23.  After a Central timeout, the Tigers would score the final three points of the match to win their first set of the season.
 
Wesleyan got quickly back to work in the fourth. The Coyotes led 5-4 when Ryan Wagner put down a kill and the Coyotes extended the lead out to 8-4. After a Central point, the Coyotes scored two more to make it 10-5. After a Central point, the Coyotes scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 20-7 lead on Angel Diaz's service ace.
 
After two Central points, the Coyotes spung off five of the last six points including back-to-back aces by Jaron Lindsay during the run and Wagner ended it with a kill at 25-10.
 
Wagner had 12 kills hitting .524 in the match while Vandeplas had nine kills as KWU hit .216 as a team. Diaz handed out 19 assists and Caleb Tener had 12. KWU had 12 aces as a team including four from Lindsay and three by Stepp. Barry Neff, Jr., had 13 digs along with Lindsay.
 
The Coyotes are back in action on Friday and Saturday, hosting the Coyote Classic in Mabee Arena and Muir Gym.
 
KWU will play Central Christian on Friday at 2:30 in Mabee Arena, then play Saint Ambrose on Friday at 7 p.m., in Muir Gymnasium. The Coyotes then play Simpson College at Noon Saturday in Mabee Arena, and face Morningside on Saturday at 2:30 in Muir Gym.
