OTTAWA, Kan. -- Kansas Wesleyan Women's Volleyball team let a close one run away from them in a five-set match against Ottawa University where the Braves topped the Coyotes. 25-18, 22-25, 14-25, 25-22, 3-15.
The first set started and stayed neck and neck throughout. KWU found a little bit a breathing room with a 5-point run to give the Coyotes a 13-7 lead over the Braves and force a timeout. The teams would swap points, but KWU would keep a comfortable lead and the take the first set 25-18 lead.
Braves would battle in set two with a late run after another back-and-forth set. The set was tied multiple times at 7-7, 15-15 and 17-17. KWU would then build a 21-19 lead off of multiple kills by
Rylee Serpan. OU did not shy away as they put a 4-point run together off of three KWU errors. OU did not flinch and took advantage of the late mistakes with a kill by Brittan Lee and another Coyote attack error to win the second set 25-22 to bring the match to 1-1.
Ottawa went into the third set with all the momentum after taking the second set at the end. The Braves got an early 4-0 lead off of a service ace. The Braves would keep the distance and build on their lead and the Coyotes struggled to get back into it. Set three would go the Braves 14-25 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
Coyotes did not shy away in set four as they came out with a few runs to give themselves a big lead. KWU would use a 9-2 run to give the Coyotes a 18-7 lead after handful of kills by
Sara Bebout and
Kylee Harris to give the Coyotes the lead. The Braves would rally back with a 5-point run to put the score at 18-12. Another OU run made things interested as the Coyotes were stuck on set point starting at 24-17 and the Braves got within two at 24-22. The Coyotes would get the final point of set four from a kill by
Kylee Harris off of the set by
Josie Deckinger, evening the match and forcing a deciding set.
The fifth set was all Braves as Ottawa raced out to an 11-1 lead in the set and never looked back.
Kansas Wesleyan is now 9-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The Coyotes will return to Salina after being on the road for nearly a month to continue the conference slate to play Tabor College on Wednesday, October 2nd at 7 p.m. in Mabee Arena.
