Women's Basketball enters key stretch of season, hosting Tabor Friday, Bethel Wednesday, at Avila next Saturday

The Coyotes begin play in 2025 with three Kansas Conference games in eight days against Tabor, Bethel, and Avila.

THE SERIES 
  • Tabor has won three in a row and six of seven against KWU. The Bluejays won all three games last season – 77-61 in Salina last January, 86-38 in Hillsboro in February and 72-46 in the semifinals of the KCAC Tournament in Hartman Arena. Tabor leads the series 24-18 since 2006.
  • KWU has won four in a row and 13 of the last 15 against Bethel. The teams played once last season with the Coyotes winning 63-60 in January in North Newton. They have dominated the series since 2005 winning 32 of the 37 games.
  • Against Avila, KWU has won the last four games, six of the last seven and leads the series 9-2 since 2018. They played once last season with the Coyotes prevailing 62-57 in January inside Mabee Arena. 


KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
  • Saturday's game against Tabor matches the top two teams in the KCAC standings, KWU with a one game lead over the Bluejays. The Coyotes have won nine in a row and are 7-1 in games played in Mabee Arena. They defeated Saint Mary 66-54 in Leavenworth in their last game before the Christmas break.
  • Wesleyan has outscored the opposition 77.5 to 62.8 so far this season. The Coyotes are shooting 45 percent overall, 35.5 percent from the 3-point line, 72 percent from the free throw line and have a plus-5.1 rebounding advantage. They're committing 15.5 turnovers per game and forcing 15.1.
  • The offense is balanced and led by LaMyah Ricks who averages 13.1 points. Jill Stephens averages 11.7, Angel Lee 10.1, Hampton Williams 8.4, and Odessa Ozuna 8.3. Williams averages a team-best 5.8 rebounds while Lee and Ricks average a team-high 2.9 assists apiece.


TABOR AT A GLANCE
  • The Bluejays, the KCAC's preseason favorites, enter Wednesday's game having lost two of their last three games. They lost to Friends 62-50 on Dec. 11, defeated Avila 80-65 on Dec. 14, and lost a non-conference game at Southeastern Florida 75-57 on Dec. 16 in their final game before the break.  
  • As usual Tabor has been stingy on defense. Opponents are averaging 62.3 points overall, 58.7 in conference play. The Bluejays average 69 points and are shooting 44.6 percent overall, 36.5 percent from long range.
  • Sophomore guard Lillian Veer is the leading scorer (12.5) with graduate forward Olivia Owens next (11.3). Veer has scored in double figures eight times so far and averages a team-high 4.4 rebounds.


BETHEL AT A GLANCE
  • The Threshers are on a roll having won six of their last seven after starting the season 0-6. They beat Sterling 87-85 in Sterling and Oklahoma Wesleyan 68-66 at home in their last two games before the break. They also defeated Friends 73-69 Dec. 4 in North Newton.
  • Sophomore guard Kendall Locke is the team's top scorer (16.8) followed by senior guard Natalie Richards (14.0) and sophomore forward Madyson McKinzie (11.8). Locke has scored in double figures in 11 of the 12 games and has scored 50 in Bethel's last two games before the holidays. She also averages a team-best 6.9 rebounds.
  • Bethel averages 71 points and surrenders 70. The Threshers are shooting 40 percent from the field and 30 percent from long range. They average 17 turnovers and force 18.6.


AVILA AT A GLANCE
  • The Eagles have lost their last three games after posting back-to-back victories. They lost to Tabor Dec. 14 then dropped non-conference games to Dakota Wesleyan and Northwestern (Iowa) Dec. 18 and 19. Their last victory was over Saint Mary 86-74 Dec. 11 in Kansas City, Mo. Avila lost its first seven games of the season.
  • Junior forward Madilyn Melton and sophomore guard Marlie Wright lead the offense with scoring averages of 12.8 and 12.5, respectively. Wright averages a team-high 6.5 rebounds with Melton next at 5.4
  • Avila averages 63 points and allows just under 75. The Eagles are shooting 3.95 percent collectively, 33.5 percent from the 3-point arc. They are being outrebounded by just under five per game and average 16 turnovers while forcing 13.
