THE SERIESÂ
- The Coyotes have won two in a row against Sterling but trail the series 27-17 since 2005. They defeated Sterling 78-71 in the first game this season on December 4 but the Warriors were victorious in seven of eight before the two victories.
- Wesleyan ended a two-game skid against Saint Mary with a 66-54 victory on December 14 in Leavenworth. KWU had won eight in a row before the two setbacks and leads the series 26-11 since 2005.
KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
- The Coyotes won twice last week defeating Bethany 57-47 on Wednesday in Mabee Arena then notched a huge 73-69 victory over Friends on Saturday also in Mabee Arena. Friends entered the game in second place in the conference standings. KWU has a two-lead over the Falcons and three ahead of Tabor and Bethel entering play this week.
- KWU limited Bethany to 23 percent shooting (18 of 69) that included 2 of 14 from beyond the 3-point arc. Angel Lee scored a team-best 14 points. Friends led 34-31 at halftime Saturday and KWU took a 56-55 lead into the fourth quarter. Lee scored 22 while Odessa Ozuna had 11 and LaMya Ricks and Paige Chauncey had 10 each. KWU shot 51 percent (27 of 53) after the first quarter. Chauncey also had 10 rebounds.
- Ricks and Lee scored 16 apiece and Ozuna had 13 as KWU rallied in the fourth quarter against Sterling in the first game. The Warriors led 60-54 after three quarters but the Coyotes won the final 10 minutes 24-11. KWU outscored Saint Mary 49-35 in the second half in the first game this season. Hampton Williams had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Lee scored 11. Neither team shot well – KWU 26 percent (15 of 58), the Spires 28 percent (17 of 61).
STERLING AT A GLANCE
- The Warriors are playing well of late having won three in a row and four of five. They defeated McPherson 99-51 on the road Wednesday and Evangel 83-82 on Saturday in Sterling. The surge comes after a three-game losing streak
- Senior guard Korryn Clason is the top scorer (22.4 points) and is shooting 41 percent from 3-point range (16 of 39), 48 percent overall. She scored 29 against KWU in the first game and has tallied at least 14 points in every contest this, surpassing 30 points four times. Senior guard Alissa Heskamp averages 14.0 points.
- Sterling averages 79 points on 48 percent shooting, 31 percent from deep. The Warriors allow 67 points and are forcing opponents into 20.6 turnovers per game.
SAINT MARY AT A GLANCE
- The Spires take a two-game winning streak into their game at Friends on Wednesday — Ottawa 78-53 last Wednesday and Bethany 79-66 Saturday, both in Leavenworth. They had lost four in a row and six of seven before the two victories.Â
- Alanis Delgado had 13 points and Katelynn Ostronic 10 in the first game against KWU. The Spires' shooting woes in the contest included 2 of 18 from 3-point range and 18 of 31 at the foul line.
- Delgado, a senior guard, leads the team in scoring (15.5) followed by sophomore guard Addison Schletzbaum (10.6) who also averages a team-best 8.4 rebounds. The Spires average 70 points and allow 68. They're shooting 37.7 percent overall, 30 percent from long range.
