The Kansas Wesleyan Men's Soccer team was prepared to face the NAIA No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on Saturday night at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.
The Coyotes did not back down and went toe-to-toe with the Eagles, but came up just short in a 2-1 setback.
It was the Coyotes who were on the board first.
Vincent Pertusot took a throw in from the left sideline and found
Skyler Denny who headed the ball to
Brennen Lamont at the top of the 6-yard box who headed it in near post past OKWU keeper Marko Rodic.
KWU held the lead until the 40th minute when OKWU got a score on a broken play in front of goal as Biel Campo scored it off an assist from Vitor Meirinho.
The match went to half tied 1-1.
The Coyotes battled with the Eagles through physical play on both sides in the second half.
OKWU's go-ahead goal came in the 77th minute as Campo scored again, taking a ball from Ryunsokue Masuzuka and scoring it, going 1-on-1 with KWU keeper
Shae Wirt who stopped an initial shot by Campo on the play but could not recover to stop the follow.
Gonzalo Gaubeka nearly had an equalizer in the 84th minute but his shot would be saved.
OKWU led in shots 10-4 in the match. Lamont had two to lead the Coyotes.
KWU is back in action on Wednesday heading to Lindsborg, then heading to Winfield on Saturday to take on Southwestern.
