BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Kansas Wesleyan Women's Volleyball faced the No. 9 ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on Saturday at Mueller Sports Complex and the Eagles came away with the straight set win over the Coyotes 25-23, 25-14, 25-17.
The Coyotes had a chance to win the first set after having to come back several times in the set. KWU trailed 15-13 but scored three points to take a brief 16-15 lead. OKWU took a 17-16 lead then the Coyotes scored five of the next six points to lead 21-18. Back came the Eagles scoring the next four to take a 22-21 lead. The Coyotes came back with two straight on a kill by
Kylee Harris and a service ace by
Tristyn Hedman to take a 23-22 lead. OKWU would score the final three points of the set to take the first 25-23.
Oklahoma Wesleyan jumped out to an 8-2 lead but after the Coyotes got back to within two at 9-7, the Eagles ran off five straight to take a 14-7 lead. KWU never got closer than five points the rest of the set at 18-13 when OKWU scored seven of the last eight to win 25-14.
KWU had an 8-5 lead in the third set, but an 11-1 run by OKWU in the set was the difference maker as the Eagles took a 16-9 lead and later extended it to 22-12 before winning the set and the match.
Joey Pennington had nine kills to lead the Coyotes.
Rylee Serpan had eight.
Blair Pennington and
Sara Bebout had 12 assists each.
Avery Conner and
Kate Bebout had four blocks each. Hedman had 10 kills.
The Coyotes return home for a pair of matches next week for Homecoming Week. KWU plays host to the arch-rivals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. inside Mabee Arena, then hosts Southwestern at 6 p.m. Friday.
KWU will recognize members of the 2011 Women's Volleyball team being inducted into the Jerry Jones Kansas Wesleyan University Coyote Athletic Hall of Fame during Friday's match with Southwestern.
