Men’s Soccer tops Spires 4-2

Kansas Wesleyan's fourth goal of the night in Saturday's game with the University of Saint Mary Spires was a dream come true for any goalkeeper.

Kansas Wesleyan goalkeeper Shae Wirt drilled home a direct kick from 57 yards out from goal for KWU's fourth tally of the evening as KWU topped the Spires 4-2 at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.

Wirt came out of the box in the 86th minute after Noel ZImbeva was fouled by a Saint Mary player just over the midfield stripe. Wirt lined up the kick just inside the left football hash marks on the field from 57 yards out and drilled it home just over the Saint Mary keeper under the crossbar of the goal for the tally.

Wirt's goal set off a wild celebration by the Coyote faithful for the keeper goal.

The match was high energy all evening long.

The Coyotes were on the board first in the 10th minute as Brennen Lamont wa fouled inside the penalty area giving the Coyotes a try from the penalty spot. Zimbeva stepped up and scored it to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.

KWU would take the 1-0 lead into the half.

Saint Mary got its equalizer in the 52nd minute. Robin Van Voorst scored off an assist by Jude Rodwell to level things at a goal each.

In the 59th minute, Saint Mary would take a 2-1 lead as the Spires would convert a penalty kick by Van Voorst.

The Coyotes would quickly turn momentum to their favor. Just 30 seconds later, Emilio Rodriguez would get the ball on the left side just outside the box and send in a rocket of a shot that would score and equalize things at 2-2 in the 60th minute.

Seth Flores would get the eventual game winner for the Coyotes in the 69th minute on a direct kick from the right side about 35 yards out perfectly placed in the side netting to make it 3-2.

Then came Wirt's goal. Zimbeva was fouled and Wirt would come up and drill home the aforementioned shot to make it 4-2 Coyotes.

Wesleyan nearly added one more goal in the final minutes but Gonzalo Gaubeka's shot was saved off the line by a Saint Mary defender.

Gaubeka had six shots to lead the Coyotes to a 21-9 advantage in the match. Zimbeva added four.

Wirt added two saves in goal.

Wesleyan is on the road for a pair of matches next week, heading to Tabor on Wednesday and at Ottawa on Saturday.
