Men’s Basketball with key match-ups this week at McPherson and Oklahoma Wesleyan

Kansas Wesleyan men's basketball will be challenged twice this week as the Coyotes head on the road to McPherson and No. 13 ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Against McPherson, the Coyotes have won seven straight meetings. KWU won 72-65 last season in Salina and 83-78 in McPherson. Easton Hunter and Alex Littlejohn led KWU with 17 points each in the game in McPherson last year. The two teams have met 221 times, the second largest match-up for KWU against a single team in program history. KWU leads the all-time series 113-108.
 
Against Oklahoma Wesleyan, OKWU has won 12 straight in the series. The last KWU win came in 2020. OKWU won 78-68 last season. Easton Hunter had 34 for the Coyotes. Derrick Talton had 17 for OKWU. OKWU leads the all-time series 24-7.
 
 
LOOKING AT THE COYOTES
  • KWU enters the week 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the KCAC. The Coyotes went 1-1 last week, defeating MidAmerica Nazarene 77-76 on Monday, but falling to Ottawa 92-86 in overtime on Saturday.
  • After shooting 50 percent in the first half, KWU shot just 36 percent in the second half and overtime. Brandon Avedon had 22 points to lead the Coyotes, Wyatt Powell and Gabe Phillips had 17 each.
  • KWU is averaging 77.3 points per game while shooting 44.3 percent from the field, 26.5 percent from 3-point range and 76.4 percent at the free throw line. KWU opponents are averaging 82.2 points per game while shooting 49.7 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3, and 68.8 percent at the line. KWU is outrebounding opponents 34.7 to 30.7.
  • Caiden Punt leads the Coyotes in scoring at 19.5 per game and rebounding at 8.3 per game, Powell is averaging 14, and Avedon 13.7.

LOOKING AT McPHERSON COLLEGE BULLDOGS
  • McPherson enters the week 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the KCAC. The Bulldogs defeated Southwestern 83-74 on Saturday in Winfield. Corbin Gunn had 27 points and Charles Snyder had 20 to pace the Bulldogs.
  • The Bulldogs are averaging 78.2 points per game while shooting 43.2 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range and 72 percent from the free throw line. McPherson's opponents are averaging 70.8 points per game while shooting 41.1 percent from the field, 35.5 percent from 3, and 63 percent at the line. McPherson's opponents are outrebounding the Bulldogs 39 to 37.9.
  • Snyder makes the Bulldogs go, leading the team in scoring at 15 per game and in rebounding at 7.0 per game. Gunn averages 14.8 points per game, Dash Johnson 12 and KJ Marshall 10.2.
  • Snyder ranks ninth in the KCAC in rebounding.
  • TJ Eskildsen is in his seventh season leading the Bulldogs.
 
 
LOOKING AT OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN EAGLES
  • Oklahoma Wesleyan is 4-1 overall, 1-0 in the KCAC and is ranked No. 13 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll. The Eagles defeated Tabor 96-78 on Saturday. Nick Bene had 16 and Isaax Stanek had 13. Eighteen players played for the Eagles who had 17 of their 34 field goals made as 3-pointers.
  • The Eagles have a big Top 25 battle on Wednesday, facing No. 18 ranked Friends.
  • OKWU is outscoring opponents 79.8 to 70.0, while shooting 45.1 percent from the field, 35.2 percent from 3-point range and 60.5 percent at the free throw line. OKWU's opponents are shooting 45.2 percent from the field, 35.5 percent from 3-point range and 60.5 percent from the free throw line. OKWU outrebounds opponents 35.8 to 29.4.
  • Temaje Izuagbe leads the Eagles in scoring at 18.2 per game, while Bene averages 10.0 and leads the Eagles in rebounding at 7.2 per game.
