Women's Basketball faces Friends on Saturday

The Coyotes are back home for the first time in three weeks for a Kansas Conference contest against Friends.

THE SERIES 
The Coyotes won two of three last seasons but the series is tied 5-5 in the last 10 contests. KWU won 78-65 in Wichita and 73-69 in Salina before Friends won 64-62 in the KCAC postseason tournament in Mabee Arena. The Falcons have a 23-20 advantage in the series since 2005.


KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
  • The Coyotes lost to Sterling 62-57 Wednesday in Sterling. They led 51-43 early in the fourth quarter following back-to-back 3-pointers from Madison Lambert, but the Warriors went on an 18-3 run over the next seven minutes and led 61-54 with 30 remaining. The loss ended KWU's three-game winning streak.
  • Freshman Anna Jueneman scored a career-high 11 points and senior Kelsey Koza added a career-best 10 for KWU, which shot 32 percent from the field and had 22 turnovers. Sterling shot 34 percent and had 18 turnovers.
  • In the second game against Friends last season played in Mabee Arena, Paige Chauncey had 10 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out and Odessa Ozuna finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

FRIENDS AT A GLANCE
  • The Falcons, who received votes in the latest NAIA top 25 poll, edged Bethel 70-65 Wednesday in Wichita. It was their fourth consecutive victory after a 95-88 loss to Evangel in their KCAC opener.
  • Senior forward Rayland Garner leads the team in scoring at 20.3 and rebounding at 8.4. Senior forward Abigail Barr averages 16.0 points and 6.7 rebounds and graduate guard Lauryn McIver 14.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists. Garner and Barr scored 18 apiece in the victory over Bethel.
  • Friends averages 81 points and is shooting 46 percent overall, 35 percent from 3-point range. Turnovers have been an issue – 21 per game – but the Falcons are outrebounding their opponents by 8.3 per game. Opponents are averaging 72 points and shooting 39 percent.

KWU travels to York for a 6 p.m. game next Wednesday then faces Saint Mary at 5 p.m. Dec. 13 in Mabee Arena.
