Coyotes back in action this week at Bethel Wednesday, hosting Avila on Saturday

The Coyotes continue Kansas Conference play with two games this week, the first on the road and the second at home.

THE SERIES
  • The Coyotes split two games with Bethel last season but have won five of the last six. They lost 69-61 in Salina then won 63-61 in North Newton. KWU has won 33 of the 39 games played since 2005.
  • KWU has won the last five and seven of eight against Avila. The Coyotes defeated the Eagles 88-45 in Kansas City, Mo., in their only game last season.  Wesleyan has a 10-2 lead in the since 2018.


KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
  • The Coyotes lost to Tabor 81-74 in overtime Saturday in Hillsboro. Izzy McCool's basket with 1.7 seconds left in regulation tied it 64-64 and forced the extra period. The Bluejays scored the first five points in OT, though, and KWU couldn't get any closer than three the rest of the way.
  • Odessa Ozuna was unstoppable finishing with a career-best 30 points and also had five rebounds and four steals. The junior point guard was 12 of 18 from the field and 5 of 6 at the free throw line while playing 41 minutes. She scored seven of the Coyotes' 10 points in overtime. McCool added 15 points on 6 of 12 shooting.
  • Ozuna averages 13.7 points on 48 percent shooting, 37 percent from 3-point range, and 6.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists. She's averaging 20.8 points on 54 percent shooting (31 of 54) and 6.8 rebounds KWU's last four games.


BETHEL AT A GLANCE
  • The Threshers have won three of their last four, including a 77-58 victory over Avila on Saturday in North Newton. The streak after dropping three in row against the top three teams in the KCAC standings (Friends, Evangel and Sterling).
  • Twin sisters Kendall and Karlee Locke have been double trouble for opposing teams. Kendall averages a team-high 19.6 points and 6.4 rebounds while Karlee averages 13.8 points and 6.8 rebounds. Kendall scored 24 and Karlee 15 in Bethel's win Saturday. Kendall also averages 6.5 assists and 3.7 steals.
  • Bethel averages 76 points, allows 73 and is forcing opposing teams into 19 turnovers while committing 17.


AVILA AT A GLANCE
  • The Eagles take a three-game losing streak into their contest against Ottawa on Wednesday. They fell to Bethel 77-58 on Saturday in North Newton following losses at Saint Mary and at home against Tabor. The setbacks come after they had won three in a row.
  • Senior forward Madilyn Melton (17.4), junior guard Marlie Wright (14.3) and senior guard Kathleen Stanley (10.5) are the top scorers. Melton also leads the Eagles in rebounding (6.8) while Stanley has made a team-best 35 3-pointers (48.6 percent).
  • Avila averages and allows 69 points. The Eagles shoot 43 percent as a team, including 33 percent from beyond the arc; opponents are shooting just 26 percent from deep. Turnovers have been an issue for Avila though – 19 per game.


COMING UP
The Coyotes play two conference home games next week — McPherson at 6 p.m. Wednesday then Evangel at 1 p.m. Saturday.
