Kansas Wesleyan Men's Volleyball got two outstanding individual performances by
Kaleb Cui and
Conor Williams coupled with solid team play as the Coyotes upended the Culver-Stockton Wildcats on Saturday at Mabee Arena.
The victory ends KWU's four-match losing streak and gives the Coyotes their first Heart of America Conference victory of the season.
The Coyotes won 25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24.
Wesleyan led 3-1 to start the first set and pushed the lead out to 8-2 on a kill by
Joshua Condon. Culver came back to tie the set at 8-8, and again at 9-9 before the Coyotes got five straight points that included a run of three straight service aces by Cui to make it 14-9.
Culver hung in there, tying the set at 20-all but the Coyotes scored four of the next five points to lead 24-21 on a kill by Williams and closed out the set on a Cui kill.
The Wildcats led 3-1 to start the second set but the Coyotes came back and took a 6-5 lead on a kill by Cui. The teams traded the lead back and forth until Culver was able to take a 14-11 lead. The Wildcats led 17-13 when the Coyotes made a charge getting within a point on a kill from Williams at 18-17. C-SC led 19-17 when KWU made its move. The Coyotes got five straight points to take a 22-19 lead and then finished off the set with three straight points for the 25-20 win.
Wesleyan trailed 10-8 in the third set before Culver ran off five straight points to take a 15-8 lead. The Coyotes struggled to get a run put together dropping the set 25-16.
Culver-Stockton took a 3-0 lead to start the fourth set, but the Coyotes would come back and tie it at 6-6. The Coyotes were able to push in front at 8-7 and a few more times before Culver had it tied at 12. A kill by Williams sparked a 3-0 run by the Coyotes to make it 15-12 but again Culver came back to tie it at 16.
Culver pushed out to a 21-19 lead but the Coyotes weren't ready to give in. Trailing 22-20, KWU got three straight points including a solo block by Williams to lead 23-22. Culver tied it again but a service error by the Wildcats gave KWU match point. Culver tied it at 24, but the Coyotes closed it out on back-to-back kills by Cui.
Cui had a career high 22 kills while Williams added 20.
Dallas Manaku handed out a career high 48 assists and had 11 digs.
Josh Kiely had 14 digs for the Coyotes.
KWU is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Avila in a Heart of America contest at 7 p.m. at Mabee Arena. KWU then heads to Graceland on Friday.
