KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas Wesleyan Men's Volleyball took a brief reprise from the grueling Heart of America Conference schedule on Tuesday, as the Coyotes faced the Avila Eagles at Avila's Mabee Fieldhouse.
The Coyotes would come away with a straight set sweep of the Eagles, sweeping the two meetings between the teams this season winning 25-19, 25-21, 25-19.
Wesleyan had to play from behind in the first set trailing 4-1 out of the gates and trailed 11-7 before making a move. A 7-1 run by the Coyotes capped by back-to-back kills by
Anthony Mule to make it 14-12 Coyotes. KWU extended the lead to 19-15 and led 22-18 on a service ace by
Josh Kiely before Avila got one more point.
The Coyotes closed out the first set win with three straight points ending it with a block by
Conor Williams and
Kaleb Cui.
Avila again led to start the second set but the Coyotes came back and tied it at 14-14 on a Williams kill. Avila took a 18-16 lead and led 19-17 when the Coyotes scored six of the next seven to take a 23-20 lead. After an Avila point, the Coyotes closed it out with kills by Williams and Cui to close the set.
A 5-0 run by the Coyotes in the final set turned a 5-3 deficit into an 8-5 lead. KWU was able to extend the lead out to 13-8, and led 17-12. Avila got within three at 21-18, but the Coyotes closed it out scoring four of the final five points.
KWU hit .348 as a team and were led by 13 kills by Cui. Mule had nine and Williams and
Alexander Rivera had seven each.
Dallas Manaku had 26 assists. Mule had 11 digs and Rivera seven.
Brysen Newville had four assisted blocks.
The Coyotes are back in action this weekend, taking on Clarke on Friday night at 7 p.m., and then No. 7 ranked Mount Mercy on Saturday at 11 a.m. Both games in Mabee Arena.
