Kansas Wesleyan Baseball swept the Hesston College Larks 8-1 and 9-1 on Thursday evening at Dean Evans Stadium.
Thursday's wins pushed the No. 12 ranked Coyotes to the 30-win mark for the sixth straight season as KWU improved to 30-6 on the season, becoming the fifth NAIA team this season to hit the 30-win mark.
Â
In the first game, the Coyotes got another stellar pitching performance by
Davin Hinote in his first start since throwing a no-hitter last week against York.
Â
Hesston got on the board first with a homer to lead off the game, but the lead would be short-lived for the Larks. Hinote immediately bounced back, striking out the next two batters and giving up a single before getting a ground out to end the inning.
Â
The Coyotes tied it in the bottom of the inning.
Garrett Garfield doubled and then scored on
Fernando Ruvalcaba's single down the line in right.
Â
Hinote got two more strikeouts in the second ahead of the Coyotes pulling ahead in the bottom of the inning.
Blake Dale led off the inning with a ground-rule double.
Logan Arndt then reached on an error and
Jackson Harriger drove in the first run on a ground out.
Niko Olson then reached on a fielder's choice that did not yield an out as Hesston's third baseman tried to tag out Arndt at third but was unsuccessful.
Â
Carter Allen drove in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
Â
Another Hesston outfield error on a ball hit by Ruvalcaba got him to third base and
Joe Finder brought him home with a single to right. Dale walked to lead the bases and Arndt hit into a fielder's choice to bring in another run.
Â
The Coyotes got two more in the fourth as Allen led off the inning with a double and then scored on Ruvalcaba's sacrifice fly.
Chris Finocchario walked and went to third on a Finder hit and then scored on a hit by Dale.
Â
Wesleyan added one more run in the sixth as Finocchario walked to open the inning, went to second on a wild pitch then scored on a hit by Finder.
Â
Finder had three hits and drove in two runs, Dale had two hits. Hinote went five innings allowing one run on two hits, all coming in the first inning while recording six strikeouts and just one walk.
Sam Pyland and
Tyler Wise each worked an inning.
Â
As the sun set, the lights came on at The Dean for the second game.
Â
The Coyotes broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning with four runs.
Â
Finocchario walked to start the inning and then scored on a double by Dale.
Chase Aurand then reached on an error on a bunt attempt and went to third on the play allowing Dale to score.
Â
Tyler Nordyke walked and a wild pitch brought in Aurand. Allen singled later in the inning on a bunt to bring in a run.
Â
Hesston led off the fourth inning with a homer, but that was all the offense the Larks could generate.
Â
Finocchario hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning that brought in Allen who led off the frame with a single.
Â
In the fifth the Coyotes added another run, Dale led off the frame reaching on a fielding error by Hesston's shortstop and going to second on a throwing error on the same play. He then scored on Aurand's sacrifice fly to make it 7-1.
Â
The Coyotes added two more runs in the sixth as Garfield led off the inning with towering homer to left and two batters later Finocchario launched a ball into the darkness beyond left center field to make it 9-1.
Â
Wesleyan only needed eight hits to put nine runs on the board. Allen had three hits, Garfield and Finocchario two each. Finocchario drove in three runs.
Â
Aidan Henderson went four innings for the Coyotes to get the win, holding Hesston to three hits and one run.
Daniel Turnham,
Kayden Shivers and
Isaac Hawthrone all pitched one inning each for the Coyotes.
Â
The teams will meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader at Dean Evans Stadium before the Coyotes step back into conference play next Wednesday at home against McPherson.
