A missed penalty by Hastings in the 88th minute proved to be the difference as the Kansas Wesleyan Men's Soccer team got a 2-1 win over the Hastings Broncos on Wednesday night at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.
The Coyotes held a 2-1 lead after
Juan Manuel Lozada Leon's goal in the 62nd minute coming off a wide open net after a misplay by the Hastings keeper.
A foul in the penalty area set up the shot from the spot by Hastings' Jake Watt. Watt's shot would miss high off the crossbar and bounce high in the air and was cleared by the Coyote defense to preserve the win.
The defensive stop was the hallmark of a stiff Wesleyan defense that held Hastings without a goal after the 35th minute.
Hastings took the lead on a goal by Watt on a corner set piece in the 35th minute.
Jose Valdez found the equalizer for the Coyotes in the 54th minute off a pass by
Inigo Munoz Sainz.
Hastings ended up outshooting the Coyotes 17-13 in the match. KWU goalkeeper
Andrew Cole had seven saves for the Coyotes. Valdez had five shots to lead the Coyotes offensively.
The record is 2-1 for the Coyotes heading into Saturday's match-up with Oklahoma Panhandle State at JRI Stadium. Kickoff is currently scheduled for 1 p.m., but continued extreme heat in the area could cause start time to change.
