Robert "Boomer" Cunningham joined the Kansas Wesleyan University football staff as Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator in December 2024.
In his first season directing the Coyotes' offense, Cunningham engineered one of the top units in the NAIA. During the 2025 season, Kansas Wesleyan ranked 9th nationally in third-down conversions, while the offensive line allowed just 12 sacks. The Coyotes featured one of the nation's premier rushing attacks, led by a running back who finished 1st in the NAIA in rushing attempts (262), 3rd in rushing yards (1,388), and 4th in rushing yards per game (126.2). Cunningham also coached Five All-KCAC selections, including two offensive linemen, one running back, one tight end, and one wide receiver.
Prior to Kansas Wesleyan, Cunningham spent three seasons at Delta State University as the running backs and tight ends coach. Under his direction, the Statesmen rushed for an impressive 5,343 yards and 52 touchdowns over three seasons. He also coached a running back who was named a Conerly Trophy Finalist, which is awarded annually to the top college football player in the state of Mississippi.
Before Delta State, Cunningham served as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Southern Arkansas University. During his tenure, the Muleriders consistently fielded one of the most productive offenses in both the Great American Conference (GAC) and NCAA Division II.
Southern Arkansas led the GAC in total offense during Cunningham's first three seasons, averaging more than 450 yards per game while ranking among the Top 25 nationally in Division II. His offensive line helped produce a rushing attack that surpassed 2,100 rushing yards in 2016, the program's highest total since 2005, followed by another 1,800-yard rushing season in 2017.
In pass protection, Cunningham's offensive line anchored one of the GAC's premier passing offenses, helping the Muleriders produce a fourth consecutive 3,000-yard passer in 2017. His offensive line surrendered just six sacks that season, ranking first in the GAC and second in all of NCAA Division II.
Throughout his coaching career, Cunningham has developed numerous standout players. He has coached 19 All-Conference selections, including:
- 8 Offensive Linemen
- 5 Running Backs
- 5 Tight Ends / Fullbacks
- 1 Wide Receiver
Prior to Southern Arkansas, Cunningham spent one season at LaGrange College as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator. In just one season, he helped improve pass protection dramatically, reducing sacks allowed from 42 the previous season to just 25.
Before LaGrange, Cunningham spent six seasons at NCAA Division I FCS member University of Central Arkansas.
During his first three seasons, he served as assistant offensive line coach and offensive quality control coach. Following the 2011 season, he was promoted to assistant offensive line coach while adding duties as recruiting coordinator and director of football operations, serving in those roles from 2012–2014.
While at Central Arkansas, Cunningham helped develop two of the most decorated offensive linemen in school history. Corey Howard (2012) and Cole Caruthers (2014) each earned:
- Southland Conference First Team honors
- Southland Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year
- FCS All-America recognition
Known for developing complete offensive units, Cunningham has consistently produced balanced, explosive offenses while mentoring elite offensive linemen, running backs, and tight ends. His reputation for player development, offensive innovation, and recruiting success has made him one of the most respected offensive coaches across the NAIA, Division II, and FCS levels. Cunningham has his Bachelor’s and Master’s from the University of Central Arkansas in Health Science and Behavior.
