Flag Football dominant in victories over Saint Mary and Pratt

No slow starts or need to come from behind this time. Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football put forth two dominating performances on Sunday in a 44-18 rout of Saint Mary and a 46-6 demolition of Pratt Community College on Gene Bissell Field at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.
 
The victories keep the Coyotes unbeaten at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the KCAC.
 
The Coyotes forced two Saint Mary 3-and-outs on first two Spire drives of the game. On the second drive the Coyotes blocked the punt as Valeria Gonzalez got a hand on it and gave the ball to the Coyotes at the Saint Mary 32.
 
KWU needed just one play to find the endzone as Ciaran DeCuir took it 32 yards to the endzone to make it 6-0 Coyotes with 1:52 left in the first quarter.
 
Wesleyan's defense came through on the next drive as Alexandra Mansur picked off a pass at the Saint Mary 15 and returned it for a score and it was 12-0 Coyotes with 54 seconds left in the first.
 
Lexi Marquez picked off a pass on USM's next drive and two plays into the second quarter Chihiro Iwata rushed 14 yards to push Wesleyan's lead out to 19-0 with 11:11 left in the first half.
 
The Coyotes forced another failed drive by Saint Mary at their own 23 and after the punt the Coyotes would drive to the USM 18. Iwata was sacked twice and threw an incomplete pass making it fourth down but the Coyotes found the end zone again on a 25 yard pass to DeCuir and it was 26-0 with 2:23 left in the half.
 
Wesleyan had one more score in the quarter as Mansur picked off another pass at the USM 13 and waltzed into the end zone and it was 32-0 Coyotes with 2:15 left before the break.
 
The Coyotes had the ball to start the third and scored on the possession as Iwata hit Angel Roman for an 8-yard score with 7:48 left in the third.
 
Saint Mary got on the board with 4:37 left in the game as Cheyenne Brooks rushed five yards for a score, however the Coyotes answered right back. Emilee Buhl hit Aaliyah Young down the left sideline and she outraced the defense to the endzone for a 66-yard score making it 44-6 Coyotes with 3:49 to go.
 
Saint Mary scored two late touchdowns to make it 44-18 at the final horn.
 
Iwata was 9 of 21 passing for 86 yards and two scores. Buhl was 5 of 18 for 102 yards with a score. Iwata also rushed six times for 47 yards and DeCuir added two runs for 37 yards and a score. Young had two grabs for 67 yards and a score. Roman had five catches for 42 yards and a score to lead the Coyote receivers.
 
Wesleyan's defense held Saint Mary to 155 yards of total offense in the game. Mansur had six flag pulls and two interceptions both returned for TDs, while Trinady Antonelli had four pulls. Marquez had a pick as did Nickayla Howard.
 
After a brief break the Coyotes faced Pratt Community College and didn't lose a step cruising the the 46-6 win.
 
Wesleyan forced two Pratt punts on their first two possessions and then scored on its second drive.
 
A 20 yard pass from Iwata to DeCuir gave the Coyotes first and goal at the Pratt 18 and Iwata hit Tucker from there for the score and PAT to put the Coyotes up 7-0 with 4:03 left in the first.
 
After another failed Pratt drive the Coyotes scored again as Iwata hit Roman for a 28 yard pass, then Tucker again this time for 15 yards and the score with 56 seconds left in the first making it 14-0.
 
The Coyotes scored again on their next drive as Iwata hit DeCuir for a 14-yard score with 5:48 left in the half making it 20-0.
 
The quick strike Coyote offense put more points on the board as Iwata hit Tori Wlodarczyk for 13 yards and the score with 2:29 to go, and then Iwata hit Jayla Howes from 24 yards out to make it 34-0 Coyotes at the half.
 
Pratt scored with 7:48 to go in the third on a 21 yard run by Aracely Lopez for the only points of the third quarter.
 
Wesleyan started the fourth with a bang as Buhl hit Vanessa Towne for a 4-yard scoring play with 11:04 to go in the game.
 
Neither team scored again until the final play of the game when Buhl hit Young for a 12 yard score as time expired making it 46-6 at the final whistle.
 
Iwata was 16 of 27 passing for the Coyotes with five touchdowns and 215 yards. Buhl was 5 of 11 for 63 yards and two scores for the Coyotes. Young had five catches for 51 yards, and three different players had three grabs each as KWU quarterbacks completed passes to nine different receivers.
 
Roman was one of three players with four flag pulls each, and added two interceptions.
 
The Coyotes held Pratt to 79 yards of total offense while racking up 281 yards.
 
The Coyotes are back in action on Wednesday, hosting the Baker Wildcats at 6 p.m. on Gene Bissell Field at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex. Baker is one of several KCAC expansion teams in flag football for the 2024 season.
