Kansas Wesleyan Men's Volleyball finished the weekend with a 4-0 record in the Coyote Classic hosted by KWU on Friday and Saturday in Muir Gym and Mabee Arena.
After notching two wins Friday, the Coyotes came back and picked up two on Saturday, easily dispatching Simpson College in the first match of the day, then rallying in the fifth set to knock off Morningside in the final match.
Against Morningside, the Coyotes won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-19, before dropping the next two 25-18, 25-20, forcing a deciding fifth set with KWU winning 15-11.
KWU controlled a majority of the opening set, but Morningside came back and tied things up at 20 and again at 21 before the Coyotes pushed out to a 24-21 lead. Morningside rallied tying it up at 24 before a service error and a block by
Cooper Stepp and
Kahlib Lawrence closed it out.
Morningside led 10-9 in the second, but an 8-1 run by the Coyotes made it 17-11 on
Jose Pina-Garcia's service ace. The cushion was enough as the Coyotes held off the Mustangs for the win.
KWU fell behind 6-1 to start the third set and couldn't bounce back. KWU fell behind 17-10 and couldn't get closer than 20-15 in the set.
The Coyotes fell behind 17-11 in the fourth, and tried to rally, getting within three at 18-15, but Morningside scored the next four to take a 22-15 lead and would win the set.
Things didn't start great in the fifth for the Coyotes, falling behind 5-1. KWU rallied though tying it up at 6 and taking the lead at 8-7 on a block by
Ryan Wagner and
Viet Nguyen.
KWU extended the lead to 13-9 before Morningside got within two at 13-11, but the Coyotes scored the final two points to take the match.
Justin Burras had 18 kills to lead the Coyotes while
Zayin Martinez had 16 as KWU hit .171 in the match.
Tyler McUne had 38 assists.
Jeremy Lapeze had 18 digs to lead the Coyotes while Pina-Garcia had 12 and McUne had 10. Lawrence was in on nine blocks while Wagner had eight total and Nguyen had seven.
KWU opened Saturday with a sweep of Simpson College 25-6, 25-10, 25-16.
The Coyotes raced out to a 10-1 lead in the opening set and led 13-4 before rattling off five more to make it 18-4. KWU outscored the Storm 7-2 the rest of the way for the win.
Leading 4-3 in the second, the Coyotes broke it open with a 10-2 run that made it 14-5. KWU led 20-9 on a kill by Lawrence, and took the set 25-10.
The third was a bit more of a struggle for the Coyotes, but KWU was able to weather the Storm. It was 11-9 Coyotes in the set when KWU scored the next five to take a 16-9 lead. Back-to-back aces by Burras made it 20-12 and Lawrence ended the match with back-to-back kills.
Lawrence led the Coyotes with seven kills, while Burras had six and Stepp and Nguyen had five each. McUne had 14 assists and
Angel Diaz had 11. Burras added four aces and three blocks. Lawrence had three blocks. Lapeze had 11 digs.
The Coyotes are back in action on Tuesday, heading to McPherson to face Central Christian in a GPAC match. KWU then hosts William Penn on Thursday, with the match played in Muir Gym and heads to Missouri Valley on Friday.
