The Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes used the luck of the Irish on St. Patrick's Day on Sunday to finish the series sweep in a doubleheader against the Southwestern College Moundbuilders with Sunday's doubleheader.
The Coyotes took the first with a 13-0 run-rule victory, and finished game 2's win with a final score of 2-0.
Game number one started strong with a two run HR from first baseman
Cruz Oxford.
"He's a sophomore in the four-hole, that's an awesome thing," KWU head coach
Bill Neale said. "He's still a young kid, and he's hitting the ball to the right spots."
Oxford went 3-for-4 with the HR and a double, and led the Coyotes with three RBIs.
The cold wind, which was blowing towards right center field, helped the Coyotes reach their sweet spot all afternoon.
"Our guys did a good job in that first game reaching that spot,"Neale said. "We definitely like that wind other than the fact that I'm freezing."
Kansas Wesleyan was unable to show off their bullpen depth, thanks to the Coyotes only needing three pitchers for the two games.
"We definitely had a lot of good guys in the bullpen who didn't get to pitch today," Neale said. "That's a good thing."
Game one starter
Jarrett Brannen earned the win with six innings pitched and four strikeouts. Reliever Nate Galusha finished the game only allowing one hit and no walks.
"(Brannen) didn't have his best stuff out there today, but he still bulldogged on," Neale said. "It's a testament to how good our pitchers are. He battled and fought, and that's why he was a first team all-conference guy."
Game 2 starter
Brett Maddock pitched a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts and four hits allowed.
The wind again helped the Coyotes earn their second victory of the day with a
Jacob Williamson two-run homer to right field.
Kansas Wesleyan has won their last two series after being swept by KCAC rival Friends University.
"Two sweeps are huge after our series against Friends," Neale said. "We're looking forward to York, but we're back on track for sure."
The series started with Thursday Night Baseball under the lights at The Dean and the Coyotes cruising to a 14-4 run-rule win.
Southwestern took an early 2-0 lead on a Carlos Camacho homer and Luca Dincola scoring on a passed ball, before the Coyotes took control.
Koby Roberts led off the 3-run second for the Coyotes with a single and then scored on
Jackson Harriger's error.
Alex Garcia scored on a passed ball and
Coulson Riggs scored stealing home to give the Coyotes a 3-2 lead after two innings.
The score stayed the same until the fourth when
Brandon Zwiener hit a 2-run pinch-hit homer to make it 5-2.
KWU added a run on a passed ball in the fifth and another in the sixth on
Jacob Williamson's ground out.
The Coyotes blew it open in the seventh with five runs as two runs scored on a wild pitch, another on a balk, one on a Harriger single and the last on a sacrifice fly by
Kendall Foster.
Wesleyan ended it on a fielder's choice in the eighth when
Reece Bishop scored after walking.
Thalen Wright got the win going seven innings allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
Ritter Steinmann pitched the eighth.
Jarrett Gable and
Alex Garcia had two hits each.
The Coyotes play next against York University starting next Friday.
