Flag Football tops Spires, stops Wildcats to earn rematch with Ottawa at Arrowhead

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. – Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football cruised to two wins on Saturday in the KCAC Flag Football Championships held at Paragon Star Sports Complex. Wesleyan dominated No. 7 seed Saint Mary in the first round 46-6, and then cruised into the finals with a 30-13 win over the Baker Wildcats in the semifinal round.

The wins set up a rematch with the Ottawa Braves in the KCAC Championship on Sunday, April 21, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The same two teams met a season ago at Arrowhead for the KCAC Championship game.

It was 12-0 Coyotes in the quarterfinal against Saint Mary almost before you could get settled into your seat at Paragon Star.

Chihiro Iwata hit Ja'Daa Wilson with a 28-yard touchdown pass to open the game with 8:37 left in the first and less than three minutes later after an Alexa Mansur interception, Iwata hit Ciaran DeCuir with a 15-yard touchdown pass with 5:55 left in the first.

After the Coyotes turned it over on downs in the second, the Coyote defense stepped up as Angel Roman forced the second interception of the day, returning it 18 yards for a touchdown and it was 18-0 Coyotes with 8:11 left in the first half.

Wesleyan scored on its next drive as Iwata found DeCuir again this time for 13 yards and the score and the PAT2 from Iwata to Roman made it 26-0 Coyotes with 2:39 left in the half.

The Coyotes stopped Saint Mary on downs a yard short of a first down at midfield with 39 seconds left and the Coyotes only needed one play to score again as Iwata hit DeCuir for the third time in the game for 39 yard out and the PAT2 was good making it 34-0 at the half.

Wesleyan didn't slow down in the second half.

After Saint Mary punted on the opening drive of the second half, the Coyotes took over at the USM 9 after the 3-yard punt and Emilee Buhl hit Aaliyah Young for the 9-yard score with 8:30 to go in the third.

Saint Mary got on the board with 4:48 left in the third, but the Coyotes answered right back scoring with seven seconds left in the quarter on Buhl's 12-yard pass to Trinday Antonelli to make it 46-6.

Neither team scored in the second half, but the Coyote defense dominated picking off two more passes, one by Wilson at the KWU 30, and another at the KWU 30 again by Nickayla Howard.

Wesleyan outgained the Spires 286-108 in the game.

Iwata was 13 of 20 for 164 yards and four touchdowns only playing in the first half. Buhl was 9 of 15 for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Iwata added 20 yards rushing, Ansdiane Rabano had 11 yards rushing and Jazmine Whitfield had four.

After stopping Baker again, the Coyotes took over with 57 seconds left in the half, and needed only two plays to find the endzone again. A 21-yard pass to Roman gave the Coyotes first and goal at the 18, and Iwata capped the drive there with a pass to Howes for the score with 50 seconds left in the half.

Wesleyan scored on the first drive of the second half as Iwata found Whitefield for a 28-yard pass with 8:01 left in the third making it 24-6.
