Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | David Toelle

Men’s Tennis knocks off Sterling 4-0 to reach KCAC Semifinals

Bryce Ware - Texas Ranger, Alex "One Arm Magician" Sherer and the rest of the Kansas Wesleyan Men's Tennis squad stepped on the courts at Genesis Tennis Center on Thursday with assignment in hand.

And they understood the assignment, passing with flying colors.

The Coyotes avenged the regular season loss to the Sterling College Warriors and eliminated the No. 4 ranked Warriors with a 4-0 victory in the KCAC Tournament Quarterfinals.

The matches for the KCAC Tournament were moved inside Thursday due to the inclement weather that occurred with rain and thunderstorms in the Salina and Lindsborg areas.

The Coyotes got things started on the right foot by winning the doubles point.

Ware and Jacob Phelps teamed up at the No. 1 spot to beat Alexandre Gaboardi and David Garces 6-1. Luke Craft and Adam Hanson beat Robin Baransi and Abhyudit Nagar 6-1 to clinch doubles. The other match with Sherer and Raul Davalos-Gavino taking on Pedro Felipoff and Louis Boisdenghien. The Sterling duo was leading 5-4 when the match was called.

In singles, it was all Coyotes in all matches.

Ware wasted little time dispatching Felipoff 6-0, 6-2. Next came Hanson beating Garces 6-1, 6-3 to put the Coyotes up 3-0 in the match.

Then there was Sherer taking on Gaboardi on the second court in the No. 2 flight. Sherer was battling through an injury, essentially playing the match one-armed, having to serve underhand and battling every shot. Sherer dropped the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-3), but then turned on the afterburners, blanking Gaboardi 6-0, 6-0 in the last two sets, to win his match and clinch the match for the Coyotes.

Wesleyan also had the other three singles matches well in hand. Davalos-Gavino was in the third set against Boisdenghien leading 3-1 when the match was clinched. He won the first set 6-3, but dropped the second 7-5. Phelps had just finished his first set against Nagar winning 6-1. Craft had won his first set against Hash and was up 3-1 in the second when the match ended.

Wesleyan will advance to Friday's semifinal, where they'll face top-seeded McPherson.

The match will again be played at Genesis due to more forecast inclement weather on Friday. KWU will play the first men's semifinal in the early afternoon after the two women's semifinals. The women's semifinals start at 7:45 a.m. on Friday.
