Men's Basketball opens 2025 hosting Tabor Friday, Bethel on Wednesday, at Avila next Saturday

The Coyotes open the 2025 portion of their schedule with three Kansas Conference games in eight days against Tabor, Bethel, and Avila.

THE SERIES 
  • The Coyotes have won the last seven Tabor including twice last season — 86-71 last January in Mabee Arena and 100-72 in Hillsboro in February. KWU leads the series 21-19 since 2006.
  • KWU has a three-game winning streak against Bethel but the Threshers won four of five before that. The teams played once last year, the Coyotes winning 72-69 in January in North Newton.
  • The Coyotes have won four in a row and six of seven against Avila. KWU won 90-71 last January in Mabee Arena in the only game they played and leads the series 10-3 since 2017.

KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
  • The Coyotes ended 2024 with losses in three of their last four games. They fell to KCAC leader Saint Mary 80-67 on Dec. 14 in Leavenworth in their final contest before the holiday break. They're 4-2 inside Mabee Arena and 2-4 on the road this season.
  • KWU averages 75.4 points and allows 72.7. The Coyotes are shooting 44.8 percent overall, 32.8 from 3-point range and 70.4 percent from the foul line. They have a plus-3.2 rebounding advantage and average 12.1 turnovers while forcing 11.
  • Senior forward Alex Littlejohn leads the team in scoring (17.9) and rebounding (10.5) and is shooting 50.3 percent from the field. Easton Hunter averages 12.2 points, has a team-best 27 3-pointers and is shooting 45.8 percent from long range.

TABOR AT A GLANCE
  • The Bluejays lost their last three games before the break and started the season with six consecutive losses. They defeated McPherson 79-75 Dec. 4 in Hillsboro for their lone victory.
  • Senior guard Kalep Crane averages a team-best 21.1 points. He scored 31 against Evangel, 30 against Ottawa and has surpassed 20 points six times including 26 in Tabor's loss to Avila before the break. Freshman guard Kam Kaniper averages 11.4 points and senior forward James Shoenfelt 10.8.
  • Tabor's led by first-year head coach Josh Roach. He came to Hillsboro after three seasons as an assistant at Science & Arts of Oklahoma. He was also an assistant at Union (Ky.).   

BETHEL AT A GLANCE
  • The Threshers started the season 4-0 but are 3-6 entering their game Saturday against Avila. They lost to Oklahoma Wesleyan in their last game before the break but defeated Evangel and won at Sterling in their two previous contests. Their marquee conquest was a 76-73 victory over Southwestern on Nov. 20 in North Newton.
  • Bethel features a balanced scoring attack led by junior guard Carmelo Yakubu (15.3) followed by senior guard Eli Wiseman (13.7), sophomore center Cade Kittrell (11.9) and senior guard Harper Jonas (10.3).
  • Bethel averages 80 points and allows 76. The Threshers are shooting 47.7 percent, 36.6 from 3-point range and 66 percent from the foul line.

AVILA AT A GLANCE
  • The Eagles ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over Tabor in their last game before the holiday pause. They had won five in a row before the skid. They also notched first semester victories at Evangel and at home against Sterling.
  • Junior forward Xavier Kahube has been impressive, averaging 18.8 points and 7.8 rebounds. Junior guards Brionne Williams and Joe Kearney average 12.5 and 11.2 points, respectively.
  • Avila is coached by Tyler Bredehoeft who's in his second season. He spent three seasons as coach at Rock Valley before going to Kansas City and was an assistant at Emporia State from 2013-18.
