Men's Basketball back at home for pair of games this week

Following three consecutive games on the road the Coyotes are back home for two Kansas Conference contests this week.

THE SERIES 
  • The Coyotes have won the last two games and four of the last five against the Swedes. They won 73-59 in December 2023 in Salina and 82-60 last February in Lindsborg. KWU has a 22-18-1 lead in the series since 2005.
  • Friends defeated the Coyotes 88-65 on December 7 in Wichita in the first game this season. KWU had won the previous five and 10 of 11. Wesleyan won 99-78 in Mabee Arena in November 2023, but Friends leads the series 24-19 since 2004.  

PROMOTIONS AT THE GAME
  • Prior to the start of Wednesday's game, KWU will recognize Alex Littlejohn for breaking the KWU all-time scoring record that stood for 70 years. Gary Cassel, the previous record holder will be at the game to congratulate Alex on breaking the record. 
  • KWU will have a meet and greet with the new football coaching staff on the Brown Mezzanine. 

KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
  • The Coyotes split two conference road games last week defeating McPherson 83-78 on Wednesday and losing to Evangel 77-74 Saturday — their third three-point loss in four games. Alex Littlejohn had another huge week finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds against McPherson and 16 points and 13 rebounds versus Evangel.
  • Littlejohn needs 17 rebounds to tie and 18 to break the KWU career rebounding record of 1,149 set by Charles Fiffe in 1950. Littlejohn became the career scoring leader on January 11 against Avila surpassing Gary Cassel's record set in 1955. He averages 18.3 points and 10.9 rebounds, both team bests.
  • Littlejohn had 19 points and nine rebounds and Easton Hunter scored 11 in the first game against Friends this season. KWU trailed 42-26 at halftime and was outscored 40-24 in the paint.

BETHANY AT A GLANCE
  • The Swedes of first-year head coach Maverick Harris lost to Friends 89-68 Saturday in Lindsborg and have dropped six of their last eight games. They defeated Sterling 76-67 last Wednesday in Lindsborg.
  • Senior Emmanuel Akpan is the leading scorer (17.6) and rebounder (8.7) and is shooting 53.8 percent from the field. Senior Kenny Hayes averages 12.3 points and is shooting 38 percent from 3-point range (35 of 92).
  • Bethany averages 80 points and allows 79. The Swedes shoot 44 percent as a team, 32 percent from long range. They have a minus-3.1 rebounding deficit but are forcing their opponents into 15.4 turnovers per game while committing 12.5 themselves.

FRIENDS AT A GLANCE
  • The Falcons have been the KCAC's surprise team this season under second-year head coach Phil McClintock. Their victory over Bethany on Saturday was the fifth in the last six games and they enter play Wednesday tied for second with Oklahoma Wesleyan in the conference standings. They were picked 10th in the KCAC coaches' preseason poll.
  • Friends averages 85 points and is shooting just under 50 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from the perimeter. The Falcons are outrebounding the opposition by 5.7 per game and are allowing an average of 71.3 points.
  • Senior forward KJ Spiller averages a team-best 16.8 points and 6.2 rebounds and shoots 51 percent from the field. Junior guard Chalese Lee is next at 12.2 points and shoots 42 percent from beyond the arc (29 of 68). Junior guard Kee'on Hutton averages 11.1 points.
