THE SERIESÂ
- The Coyotes lost to Sterling 76-72 in the first game this season on December 4 in Mabee Arena but had won five of six before that. KWU leads the series 23-16 since 2005.
- Saint Mary has won the last two games after the Coyotes won three in a row. The Spires prevailed 80-67 on December 14 in Leavenworth in the first game this season. The series is tied 19-19 since 2005.
KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
- Alex Littlejohn became the school's career rebounding leader Saturday in an 82-80 loss to Friends in Mabee Arena. Littlejohn surpassed Charles Fiffe's 75-year-old record of 1,149 with 14:01 left in the second half and has 1,633 for his career. He finished with 17 points, six rebounds. He's averaging 18.6 points, 10.6 rebounds and shooting 55 percent from the field – all team bests.
- KWU lost to Friends on KJ Spiller's basket with 2.2 seconds left. The Falcons shot 62 percent from the field (33 of 53) and the Coyotes 53 percent (28 of 53). Wesleyan throttled Bethany 101-77 last Wednesday in Mabee Arena as Littlejohn scored 26, Izaiah Hale 22 and Easton Hunter 19. The Coyotes shot 66 percent from the field (41 of 62) and outscored the Swedes 60-42 in the paint.
- Littlejohn had 29 points and nine rebounds in the loss to Sterling earlier this season. The Coyotes outscored the Warriors 48-28 in the paint but were just 2 of 14 beyond the 3-point line. Littlejohn scored 19 and Landon Wagler 12 in the loss to Saint Mary. KWU was 3 of 15 from deep while USM was 12 of 25.
STERLING AT A GLANCE
- The Warriors have lost four in a row and nine of 10 including a 92-67 loss to Evangel on Saturday in Sterling. They lost to McPherson 94-79 last Wednesday in McPherson. The skid comes after they had won eight of nine.
- Jayden Garrison scored 20 that included five 3-pointers (5 of 9) and Elias Ngoga had 17 points in the first game in Salina. The Warriors were 20 of 23 at the foul line and KWU 12 of 16. Sterling led 32-31 at halftime.
- Garrison, a senior guard, leads the team in scoring (15.7) and is shooting 38 percent from long range (54-143). Senior guard Mooch Austin is next (13.6) and leads the team in assists (4.3).
SAINT MARY AT A GLANCE
- The Spires have lost their last two games, both at home, and have slipped into a three-way tie for first with Friends and Oklahoma Wesleyan in the KCAC standings. They lost to Ottawa 65-63 last Wednesday and Bethany 80-79 on Saturday.
- Saint Mary rallied from a 35-32 halftime deficit in the first game against KWU. Kaeden Bonner scored 17 that included five 3-pointers and Jordan Brown scored 16 off the bench. The Spires had six turnovers and got 32 points from their reserve players.
- Brown, a sophomore guard, is the team's top scorer (15.5) with senior guards Bryce Johnson (12.7) and Joey Schultz (12.2) and Bonner, a sophomore guard (11.4) next. The Spires are being outrebounded by an average of 5.5 per game.
