Women’s Soccer gets 2-1 win over Saint Mary

Kansas Wesleyan Women's Soccer picked up a big 2-1 win over the University of Saint Mary Spires on Saturday at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.

The victory for the Coyotes improved KWU's record to 6-3-1 overall and 4-1 in the KCAC, while Saint Mary suffered its first conference loss of the season, falling to 4-3-4 overall and 2-1-3 in the KCAC.

Wesleyan also celebrated its senior class after the match, as coach Joe Schwartz gave all nine seniors the starting nod in the match.

The Coyotes were on the early offensive as the teams battled a strong south wind making play interesting and played majorly in the north half of the field, KWU's offensive end.

It took until the 41st minute for the Coyotes to get on the board. Abby Perez dropped a pass into Rylie Moreno-Rojas who scored it for the Coyotes giving KWU a 1-0 lead.

Both teams played evenly in the second half as well, but it was the Coyotes who struck again late in the 81st minute. Talia Walsh would score the goal outracing several defenders after taking the pass from Emma Gervy and finishing for the goal making it 2-0.

Saint Mary got a late goal in the 86th minute by Rebecca Lord.

The Coyotes had a balanced offensive attack led by Brooklyn Velotta with two shots, while eight others took one each. Isabella Galvan had three saves in goal.

Wesleyan is on the road for a pair of matches next week, heading to Tabor on Wednesday and at Ottawa on Saturday.
