LAWRENCE – Kansas Wesleyan Men's Tennis opened its 2025 spring season on Sunday and picked up a 4-3 win over Baker University Wildcats at Genesis Club South.
The Coyotes swept doubles play to win the doubles point as
Adam Hanson and
Luke Craft beat Corbin Christ and Arturo Nunez 6-1;
Raul Davalos-Gavino and
Jack Hanson beat Carlos Alcala and Juan Avila Gonzalez 7-6; and
Benjamin Cechak and
William McMurry beat Immo Ferger and Porter Lee 6-3.
In singles play it came down to the final flight at No. 6 to determine the match winner.
Collin Phelps faced Carlos Alcala in the match. Phelps just returned to the court after battling injuries that kept him out of matches for over a year. Phelps won the first set 7-5 then won the second 6-1 to secure the match win for the Coyotes.
In other singles matches Davalos-Gavino beat Christ 6-2, 6-2; McMurry beat Lee 6-1, 6-1. Craft lost to Avila Gonzalez 6-1, 7-6;
Jack Hanson lost to Nunez 6-1, 6-4; and
Gavin Chavez lost to Ferger 6-2, 6-3.
KWU is scheduled to play Midland next Friday, February 28 in Salina.
