Kansas Wesleyan had the ball looking to make a final march, trailing by a point, 20-19 to Baker University with 5:43 left in the game.
The Coyotes drove down the field and had third and goal at the Baker 9 yard line. Quarterback
Chihiro Iwata zipped a pass over the middle towards a Coyote receiver in the endzone, but unfortunately Baker's Kaley Phillips dove in front of the play and made the interception.
KWU fell 20-19 to the Baker Wildcats on Wednesday at JRI Hospitality Stadium at Graves Family Sports Complex in a non-conference match-up between the teams that was rescheduled from February 16 due to inclement weather.
It was the second heartbreaking loss for the Coyotes to Baker in as many years as the Wildcats stunned KWU last season winning 30-28 in Salina.
Baker had taken over with 11:05 left in the game after the Coyotes had driven 60 yards in eight plays to take a 19-13 lead. Baker scored on a lob pass touchdown from 13 yards out just over the outstretched hand of
Angel Roman on defense and the go-ahead PAT was good.
KWU marched downfield, the big play of the drive a 14-yard pass from Iwata to
Yui Watanabe that converted a third down. A 7-yard run by Iwata gave the Coyotes first and goal at the Baker 17.
Baker's first drive of the game ate up over eight minutes of clock as the Wildcats drove to the KWU 3, but the fourth down pass was incomplete.
Back went the Coyotes, as the Coyotes got a big pass play from Iwata to
Ciaran DeCuir to move the ball into Baker territory and Iwata ran it in from a yard out to put the Coyotes up 6-0 with 9:25 left in the first half.
Baker answered right back with a 17-yard touchdown play and the PAT was good to put the Wildcats up 7-6 with 5:40 to go.
KWU was forced to punt on the next drive, but the Coyotes got the ball back when
Soriah Tafua picked off a pass giving the ball back to the Coyotes with 2:20 to go before the half.
Wesleyan's drive stalled and Baker scored with 16 seconds left in the half to take a 13-6 lead into the break.
The Coyotes got the ball to start the third and covered the 66 yards in 10 plays, getting within a point of the Wildcats at 13-12 with 6:20 to go in the quarter.
Baker's next drive stalled and the Coyotes would take over at the 20 after the punt. Iwata and
Aliyah Wood would eat up some yardage on long plays, one for 23 yards, another for 15, and then the scoring play from 10 yards out and the PAT was good putting KWU up 19-13 with 11:05 to go.
Wesleyan outgained Baker 313 to 265 in the game. Iwata was 31 of 43 for 292 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Wood had nine catches for 101 yards to lead the Coyote receivers.
KWU returns to action on Tuesday, stepping back into Kansas Conference play against Midland at 6 p.m. in Fremont, Nebraska.
