There were two matches left on court for the Kansas Wesleyan Women's Tennis team in Monday's match with Sterling with the Coyotes trailing in the match overall 3-2.
The Coyotes would get a couple of big wins, the first by
Danielle Slack and the second by
Eliza Camp to complete the comeback and get the 4-3 win over the Warriors at Salina Tennis Alliance Center.
Camp's win was a thriller, as she won both sets 7-6 in tiebreakers, the first 7-5, and the second 7-2 over Sterling's Greta Fankhauser.
Camp trailed in her first set 4-1, but won the next four games to take a 5-4 lead. Fankhauser won the next two games to take a 6-5 lead and have a chance to win the set. Camp would win the next game to tie it and force the tiebreaker, winning 7-5.
The second set started off with Camp leading 4-1 only to see Fankhauser come back and tie it at 4-4. Camp won the next game and had a chance to close it out, but Fankhauser again won the next two games to lead 6-5 in the set. Camp again came through winning the next game and again forcing a tiebreak. Camp jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the tiebreak and after two points by Fankhauser, Camp closed it out with a 7-2 win.
Slack's match was a thriller to start as she battled against Sterling's Brooklyn Kuhn. The first set went into a tiebreaker with Slack coming out on top 7-5 in the tiebreak to win the first set 7-6. In the second set, Slack had complete control winning 6-1.
The Coyotes also had a thrilling three-set win by
Hayden Bellamy at the No. 1 position to set the table for the rest of the matches. Bellamy won the opening set 7-5, but then dropped the second to Ana Alvarez 6-1. Bellamy came back and won the match 7-5 in the third set.
In doubles, the Coyotes won two of three matches to claim the doubles point. Bellamy and Slack beat Hannah Giordanelli and Greta Fankhauser 6-1; and
Alivia Sherer and Camp beat Camila Castro Medina and Alvarez 6-4. Sterling got one win in doubles as Giovana Gaboardi and Nadia Margaritov beat
Kristi Henderson and
McKinnley Evans 7-6.
Sterling got three singles wins as Margaritov beat Evans 6-3, 2-6, 6-2; Giordanelli beat Sherer 6-2, 4-6, 6-2; and Castro Medina beat Henderson 6-3, 6-1.
The Coyotes return to action on Saturday for the regular season finale at Ottawa. The Coyotes will then play in the KCAC Tournament starting April 23 in Lindsborg.
