Kansas Wesleyan and Ottawa, the top two seeds in the KCAC Flag Football tournament that starts next weekend met on Tuesday for a non-conference match-up at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.
Ottawa would use a 20-point second quarter as the difference to come away with a 40-26 win.
The Coyotes scored the most points anyone has scored on Ottawa this season in Tuesday's game and have the second highest total allowed by the Braves as well earlier in the season.
Ottawa scored on its first two drives but could not convert the PATs as the Coyotes would knock away the pass attempts.
The Coyotes scored on their first drive in the second quarter. Wesleyan marched 66 yards in nine plays, capping the drive with
Chihiro Iwata's 13-yard pass to
Angel Roman and the PAT1 was good making it 12-7. Wesleyan would convert a pair of third downs on the drive.
Ottawa scored on its next possession and the Coyotes took over and were looking to score again. KWU avoided danger initially converting a 4th-and-1 at their own 39 and drove to the Ottawa 23 when Iwata's pass would be intercepted and returned for a touchdown to make it 26-7 just before the half.
Ottawa led 26-7 at the half.
The Braves scored on their first drive of the third quarter, but the Coyotes answered right back. A 12-yard pass to
Jazmine Whitfield set up Iwata's 6-yard scoring play to Roman to make it 33-13 with 2:49 left in the third.
Ottawa scored again to make it 40-13, but the Coyotes battled back.
The Coyotes scored on the next drive, covering 66 yards in eight plays capped by Iwata's 8-yard touchdown pass to
Aliyah Wood with 6:29 left.
After the Coyotes forced Ottawa to punt, the Coyotes scored again. KWU converted a third down that set up a 1st-and-Goal at the Ottawa 10 and two plays later Iwata found Whitfield for the 4-yard scoring play.
The Coyotes actually outgained Ottawa 334 to 319 in total offense.
Iwata was 40 of 49 passing for 309 yards and four touchdowns in the game. Wood had nine catches for 59 yards, Roman had seven grabs for 60 yards and two scores,
Ava Duerr had six catches for 38 yards and Whitfield had five for 46.
Nyjah Green and
Alexa Mansur led the Coyote defense with five flag pulls each.
KWU concludes the regular season on Thursday with a non-conference game against Midland at 6 p.m. at JRI Hospitality Stadium at Graves Family Sports Complex.
The KCAC Tournament is April 25 and 26 at the KC Current Training Center in Kansas City. KWU will play No. 7 seed Cottey at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
