SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Kansas Wesleyan Men's Volleyball dropped a three-set decision to Morningside 25-21, 25-15, 25-23 on Friday night at Allee Gym in Heart of America Conference action.
The first set was close until Morningside took a 13-8 lead. The Coyotes got back within three before the Mustangs again took a five-point lead at 16-11.
KWU bounced back and got within a point at 17-16, and were within one at 20-19 but Morningside was able to take the first set 25-21.
Wesleyan fell behind 6-1 to start the second set but battled back to get within a point at 8-7. KWU was within a point again at 10-9 before the Mustangs got six straight to take a 16-9 lead. It was 18-13 when Morningside score four straight to make it 22-13 and the Coyotes would fall 25-15 in the set.
The Coyotes trailed 10-6 in the third set but came back and tied it at 10 on a service ace by
Justin Burras. The Coyotes led briefly at 12-11 on a block by
Ethan Ricketts and
Cooper Stepp and later led 17-15. Morningside came back and took a 19-18 lead, and led 23-22 when the Coyotes tied it at 23. Morningside would get the last two points of the match to close it out.
Zayin Martinez had 11 kills and hit .450 in the match while Burras had eight kills to lead the Coyotes. Ricketts had 25 assists. Stepp had four blocks.
Jeremy Lapeze had nine digs.
KWU plays at Dordt on Saturday then closes out the season on Tuesday at Park.
