It took a little bit for the Kansas Wesleyan Men's Soccer team to get things going in Saturday's season opener against Central Christian College of the Bible. Once things got going, they went very, very well for the Coyotes.
Mateo Hoyos netted four consecutive goals for the Coyotes as part of a six-goal barrage in the second half as KWU blasted the Saints 7-0 at JRI Hospitality Stadium at Graves Family Sports Complex.
The Coyotes had 16 first half shots, but only found the net once, when Noel ZImbeva fired in a direct kick after a foul that hit the inside of the post and the far side of the goal for the score to put the Coyotes up 1-0 in the 29th minute.
Wesleyan had plenty of other chances in the first half, but could not convert.
The second half, however, was a much different story.
Seth Flores' 63rd minute goal started a quick strike sequence for the Coyotes as KWU netted four goals in six minutes.
Hoyos netted his first of the day in the 66th minute off an assist by
Brennen Lamont. Two and a half minutes later, Hoyos scored again, this time on a breakaway goal and shot to make it 4-0. Hoyos got the hat trick almost exactly a minute later with another breakaway goal taking the ball down the center of the pitch and finishing.
After a brief lull in the action, Hoyos tallied his fourth of the day in the 76th minute cleaning up the miss of a blocked shot by
Quatama Massaquoi that gave KWU a 6-0 lead.
Massaquoi, who joined the team this season after playing football for the Coyotes the past two seasons, then capped the scoring with a goal of his own in the 82nd minute, finishing with a hard left foot right in front of the goal off an assist from the left side by Flores.
Wesleyan (1-0) controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting CCCB 37-4 for the match, with 19 tries on frame. Massaquoi had eight shots to lead the Coyotes, while Hoyos had seven.
Shae Wirt had a clean sheet with two saves in his Coyote debut between the pipes.
The Coyotes will be back in action next Saturday hosting the Central Methodist Eagles at 10:30 a.m. at JRI Stadium. The game will be streamed live on Urban Edge Network (
