Cheeks set two school records as Women’s Indoor Track opens 2026 portion of schedule

WICHITA – Kansas Wesleyan's Tamia Cheeks set two new school records for the Coyote women's indoor track team at the Friends First Chance Qualifier on Saturday at the Heskett Center at Wichita State University.

Cheeks and Paige Smith were the only two Coyotes to compete at the early 2026 competition, the first of the spring semester for the team.

Cheeks opened the day setting a new school record in the high jump of 1.58m, breaking the record by Brenda Harvey set in 1984. She finished second in the meet.

She also set a new record in the 60m hurdles. She qualified third with a time of 9.53 seconds and then finished fourth in the finals of the event with a time of 9.64 seconds.

Cheeks also competed in the long jump, finishing sixth with a mark of 4.82m.

Smith's lone event appearance came in the high jump. She cleared 1.53m, which tied the former KWU school record set in 1984, and finished third overall in the event standings.

The Coyotes will be back in action next weekend heading to Topeka for the Washburn Rust Buster on Friday.
