THE SERIES
- KWU has a 2-0 record against Columbia having won 80-69 in December of 2021 in Columbia, Mo. and 92-85 in December of 2022 in Mabee Arena.
- The Coyotes have won five of the last seven against Bethany. The age-old rivals split last season, KWU winning 101-77 in Salina and Bethany 84-66 in Lindsborg. The Coyotes have a 23-20 advantage in the series since 2005.
- Wesleyan has lost the last three against Friends after winning 10 of 11. Last season the Falcons won 88-65 in Wichita and 82-80 in Salina. Friends has a 26-19 lead in the series since 2005.
KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
- The Coyotes face two ranked opponents in Columbia (No. 22) and Friends (No. 14). They ended a four-game skid with a gritty 72-70 victory over Evangel on Saturday in Mabee Arena. It was a seesaw battle with the lead changing hands 16 times with eight ties. Braylin Goins' two free throws with 1.7 seconds left sealed the deal. Caiden Punt led KWU with 15 points while Goins, a freshman guard, had 14 along with five rebounds and four assists.
- Thirteen Coyotes played meaningful minutes and 11 scored as coach Jordan Murdock expanded the rotation. Nine were on the court for at least 12 minutes. Guard Jayden Hall made his season debut and played well finishing with nine points and four rebounds in 25 minutes of action.
- Evens Appolon scored 17 and Aiden Leckband and Punt had 12 each in Wesleyan's 71-67 loss to Friends on Dec. 6 inside Mabee Arena. The Falcons closed the game with a 9-2 run.
- KWU continues to rebound well as evidenced by a plus-7.6 average. The Coyotes are shooting 45 percent overall but 30 percent from the 3-point line. Opponents are shooting 47 percent, 35 percent from deep. KWU is scoring 76 points per game and allowing 78.
COLUMBIA AT A GLANCE
- The 22nd-ranked Cougars have won their last seven games and are 7-1 on the road this season including a 70-52 victory over Central Baptist (Ark.) on Saturday. They defeated Evangel 77-60 on Dec. 17 in Columbia, Mo.
- Columbia averages 82 points and allows 66. The Cougars also rebound well with a plus-7.7 advantage for the season. As a team they're shooting 45 percent, 32 percent from deep.
- Four Cougars have double figure scoring averages – guard Caleb Jones 15.1, forward Jemeal Goines 14.1, forward Johnny Anderson 11.8 and guard Adam Sausele 10.4. Goines also grabs 9.2 rebounds and Anderson 7.6. Anderson has a team-high 38 3-pointers.
BETHANY AT A GLANCE
- The Swedes are 2-2 in their last four games with victories over Tabor and Sterling and losses to Evangel and Friends 100-66 on Saturday in Wichita. They had lost 10 in a row before that.
- Bethany has four players with double figure scoring averages – guard Keddrick Mays II 17.8, guard Jordan Reams 12.3, swingman Curtis Stovall III 11.8 and guard Donovan Newton 11.6. Mays is also the top rebounder at 5.4 and Stovall leads the team with 30 3-pointers.
- The Swedes are being outrebounded by nearly six per game. They allow an average of 84 points and score 79 points. They shoot 43 percent overall and 34 percent from long range where they average 27 shots per game.
FRIENDS AT A GLANCE
- The 14th-ranked Falcons ended a two-game losing streak with their victory over Bethany on Saturday. They had lost to KCAC leader Oklahoma Wesleyan 71-70 and Southwestern 74-71, both games on the road. They had won eight in row before the skid.
- Five Falcons scored in double figures against Bethany and four have double figure averages –guards Cahlese Lee 16.0, Collin Maclin 12.3 and Randy Woolf Jr. 11.8 and forward Ringo Deng 11.6. Lee scored 16 and Maclin 10 against KWU in the first game this season.
- Friends shoots the ball well, 48 percent overall, 36 percent from 3-point range and averages 83 points. Opponents average 72 points, commit 15 turnovers and shoot 30 percent from deep.
