Men's Basketball heads to Bethel on Wednesday, hosts Avila on Saturday

The Coyotes play two Kansas Conference games this week, the first on the road and the second at home.

THE SERIES
  • The Coyotes have won three of the last four against Bethel and are 5-5 in the last 10. They split last season – the Threshers winning 74-71 in Mabee Arena and KWU 71-70 in North Newton. Wesleyan has a 24-14 lead in the series since 2005.
  • KWU and Avila split last season after the Coyotes won the previous four games. Wesleyan won 90-71 in Salina then lost 73-70 in Kansas City, Mo. KWU has a 10-4 lead in the series since 2017.
 
KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
  • The Coyotes lost to Tabor 97-90 Saturday in Hillsboro. They led 41-35 at halftime but were outscored 62-49 in the second half. The Bluejays shot 55 percent (34 of 62) for the game – 65 percent (20 of 31) in the second half. KWU shot 42 percent (33 of 79) for the game and won the rebounding battle 39-25 but committed 17 turnovers.
  • Brandon Avedon and Evens Appolon led the scoring with 19 points apiece. Appolon also grabbed eight rebounds and had two blocks. Matthew Garber added 13 points while Braylin Goins had 12 and six rebounds off the bench.
  • The Coyotes are in a four-way tie for fourth with Southwestern, Ottawa and Sterling in the crowded KCAC standings at 4-4. They're one game behind McPherson (5-3) and one game ahead of Avila and Saint Mary (3-5).

BETHEL AT A GLANCE
  • The Threshers are on a four-game winning streak after defeating Avila 88-75 on Saturday in North Newton. They've won nine of their last 11 and were just outside the lastest NAIA Coaches Top 25 poll (26th).   
  • Senior wing Carmelo Yakubu is the leading scorer (17.0) and rebounder (6.8). He's averaging 18.4 points in KCAC play. Sophomore guard Trenton Patterson averages 12.9 points and 6-foot-9 senior center Albert Diarra 11.5 points, 13.3 against conference opponents.
  • The Threshers average 80 points and allow 71. They're shooting 47 percent, 32 percent from 3-point range, 70 percent from the free throw line, outrebounding their opponents by four and forcing 17 turnovers per game.

AVILA AT A GLANCE
  • The Eagles have lost four of five entering their home game against Ottawa on Wednesday – the losses to Oklahoma Wesleyan, Southwestern by two points, Saint Mary by three and Bethel. Their last victory was against Tabor 101-82 on Dec. 13 in Kansas City.
  • Four Eagles have double figure scoring averages – senior forward Xavier Kahube 18.6, junior guard Gio Mack 17.4, senior guard James Ross III 14.2 and senior forward Jason Ernest 11.2. Mack averages 7.1 rebounds and Kahube 6.3.
  • The Eagles can score as evidenced by their 87-points per game average and collective 50 percent shooting (35 percent from long range). Opponents average 81 points and 43 percent shooting.

The Coyotes play at home twice next week – McPherson at 8 p.m. Wednesday and Evangel at 3 p.m. Saturday.
