KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Second verse much like the first for the Kansas Wesleyan Baseball team as the Coyotes faced the Avila Eagles on Friday at the Zarda Multisport Complex.
KWU blasted the Eagles 14-4 in the second game of the series, giving the Coyotes a series win. Concerns over remaining daylight after the first game prompted the teams to postpone the third and final game of the series to a later date to be determined.
It was scoreless until the second inning when the Coyotes put three on the board. The Coyotes loaded the bases and
Niko Olson drove in two runs with a double and
Carter Allen followed with a sacrifice fly.
Avila got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but the Coyotes kept the line moving in the fourth as Olson walked and Allen hit a 2-run homer making it 5-1.
Wesleyan took advantage of two Avila errors in the fifth to add three more as
Logan Arndt reached on an error that plated two runs and later in the inning Olson singled home a run.
In the seventh, the Coyotes added two more as Arndt led off the inning with a double and then scored on a hit by
Coulson Riggs. Later in the inning Allen drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Avila scored three in the seventh to make it 10-4, but the Coyotes would again pull away late. In the ninth, KWU loaded the bases and then Allen unloaded them with a grand slam to make it 14-4.
Allen needed just two hits for the Coyotes to drive in eight runs, both hits were homers. Olson had three hits for the Coyotes and drove in three.
Thalen Wright got the win, allowing one run on four hits in six innings with four strikeouts.
Riley Gwin got the three-inning save.
KWU will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting McPherson in a KCAC midweek at 2 p.m. at Dean Evans Stadium.
