BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Sixth-ranked Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football suffered its first loss of the season as the Coyotes fell to the fourth-ranked Baker University Wildcats 31-6 on Tuesday at Liston Stadium.
Wesleyan opened the game with the ball and drove to the Baker-7, but
Chihiro Iwata's pass would be deflected and intercepted by Baker.
Baker took over and drove to its own 37 where it appeared the KWU had stopped the Wildcats' offense, but a penalty on the Coyotes kept the drive alive. Three plays later Baker found the endzone from 19 yards out.
The Coyotes again drove down the field to the Baker 11, where they faced a fourth-and-goal. Iwata would complete a pass to
Jenise Washington, but she would have her flag pulled at the 2, and the Coyotes turned it over on downs.
Wesleyan got a defensive stop on the next Baker drive as the Coyotes forced an incompletion on fourth down at the KWU 19.
KWU's next drive stalled and Baker only needed two plays on the next drive to score on a 41-yard touchdown pass.
KWU would trail 12-0 at the half.
Baker had the ball to start the second half and the Wildcats would score again on a 3-yard touchdown run to take an 18-0 lead.
Wesleyan's next drive failed and the Wildcats took over at the KWU-35 and only needed three plays to score again and take a 24-0 lead with 3:48 left in the third.
The Coyotes got on the board on the next drive as KWU used a 26-yard touchdown pass from Iwata to
Jazmine Whitfield to make it 24-6.
Baker took advantage of a KWU penalty to keep their next drive going and push into the endzone again with 8:36 left to make it 31-6.
Wesleyan got the ball back with 1:45 left in the game and moved down the field getting to the Baker-12 but time would run out.
Baker would rush for 230 yards in the game and scored three times on the ground, while only going 7-of-18 passing for 114 yards and two more scores.
Iwata was 31-of-55 passing for 285 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Iwata had 18 yards rushing.
Aliyah Wood had nine receptions for 90 yards.
Yui Watanabe had six catches for 53 yards and Whitfield had five for 50 and a score, and
Nyjah Green had six catches for 45 yards.
Ava Duerr led the defense with eight flag pulls. Green had seven stops, including two for loss and one sack.
KWU has a week off to prepare to face No. 1 ranked Ottawa next Tuesday in Ottawa.
