Flag Football rolls to third straight shutout, 46-0 over Bethel

NORTH NEWTON – Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football recorded its third straight shutout and fourth straight win as the Coyotes rolled to a 46-0 win over Bethel on Wednesday at Thresher Stadium.
 
Wesleyan's defense was again phenomenal, holding Bethel to 62 yards of total offense. The defense also forced four interceptions.
 
The Coyotes started with the ball and needed only five plays to score as Chihiro Iwata hit Laura Hernandez Sanchez for a 5-yard scoring pass with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.
 
Wesleyan's defense got its first interception on Bethel's first drive as Ansdiane Rabano picked off a pass which set up KWU's next score. Iwata found Hernandez Sanchez again, this time from 12 yards out and the PAT was good putting KWU up 13-0.
 
KWU scored on its next drive as Iwata hit Yui Watanabe for a 10-yard touchdown and KWU extended its lead to 20-0.
 
The Coyotes extended the lead to 27-0 with 3:26 left in the second quarter as Iwata hit Tomoyo Yagi for a 6-yard scoring pass.
 
The Coyotes made it 33-0 when Iwata hit Aaliyah Young for a 5-yard pass with seven minutes left in the third.
 
KWU pushed the lead out to 40-0 when Yagi hit Zo Lucas with a 10-yard scoring pass with 1:30 left in the third.
 
The Coyotes capped the scoring with Eva Decesare's 21-yard rushing touchdown with 43 seconds left.
 
Iwata was 18 of 23 passing for 225 yards and five touchdowns. Yagi was 3 of 8 for 24 yards and Naomi Shannon was 3 of 6 for 34 yards. KWU had 15 different players catch at least one pass in the game.
 
Ava Duerr led the defense with four flag pulls.
 
KWU is back on the road on Saturday, heading to Nevada, Missouri to take on Cottey College.
