Game Recap: Flag Football | | David Toelle

Wood’s huge night fuels Flag Football’s 46-6 Senior Night rout of Graceland

Aliyah Wood's final outing on the turf of Gene Bissell Field at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex was one for the record books.

Wood became the first receiver in Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football history to have over 200 yards receiving in a game, hauling in 13 catches for 204 yards and three touchdowns as the Coyotes routed Graceland 46-6 on Senior Night on Wednesday evening.

She had five catches that went for over 20 yards on the day, including all three scores – 24, 26, 28 yards. She also made several plays on defense, finishing with six flag pulls on the night.

Not bad for only three quarters of work.

KWU stalled on its first drive of the game, but after that, the Coyote offense was in overdrive.

After stopping Graceland at the KWU-4, the Coyotes took over and went 76 yards in six plays capped by Chihiro Iwata's 24 yard pass to Wood to make it 7-0 with 3:28 left in the first.

The Coyotes again stopped Graceland at the KWU-21 and this time the Coyotes only needed one play and Aaliyah Young took a handoff and sprinted untouched 59 yards for a score putting the Coyotes up 13-0 with 11:07 left in the second.

Wesleyan's next drive only needed three plays as Iwata and Wood hooked up again, this time from 26 yards to cap the drive and make it 19-0 with 8:04 left in the second.

The Coyotes scored again on the next drive as Iwata found Jenise Washington for a 7-yard score to make it 26-0 with 2:20 in the second.

Wesleyan punched one more in right before the half as Iwata found Wood again, this time from 28 yards out with 12 second left in the half to make it 33-0 at the break.

Washington picked off a Graceland pass on the first drive of the second half and the Coyotes turned it into points as Iwata found Jazmine Whitfield for a 13-yard touchdown to make it 39-0 with 7:34 to go in the third.

Washington made another interception on the next drive picking off a pass in the endzone and returning it out to the 9.

Wesleyan's drive would stall, and Graceland would score on its next drive with 7:35 to go in the game.

After stopping Graceland at its own 29, the Coyotes scored one more time as Naomi Shannon found Laura Hernandez Sanchez for a 2-yard touchdown pass to make it 46-6 with 13 seconds left.

The Coyotes racked up 448 yards of total offense on 51 plays, averaging 10.2 yards per play.

Iwata was 26 of 33 passing for 349 yards and five touchdowns. Tomoyo Yagi was 3 of 3 for 21 yards and Shannon was 4 of 4 for 27 yards and a touchdown. Whitfield added five catches for 76 yards in the game.

Wesleyan's defense held Graceland to 254 yards of offense. Ansdiane Rabano, Ava Duerr, and Wood had six flag pulls each. Rabano and Hernandez Sanchez each had a sack and Washington had two interceptions.

KWU plays at Cottey on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Nevada, Mo., and at William Woods on Saturday in the regular season finale. The KCAC Flag Football Championships are April 24-25 in Ottawa.
