Flag Football falls to Ottawa 35-14 in regular season finale

OTTAWA – Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football dropped a 35-14 decision to the Ottawa University Braves on Saturday at AdventHealth Field.

With the loss, the Coyotes will be the No. 2 seed in the KCAC Championships which will be held next weekend with the first rounds at Paragon Star Sports Complex in Lee's Summit, Mo., on Saturday, and the championship game on Sunday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The Coyotes took the ball first and drove to the Ottawa 2, but quarterback Chihiro Iwata was sacked on a fourth down play giving the ball to Ottawa.

The Braves couldn't get much going on their first drive, as the teams finished the first quarter with no score.

Ottawa got on the board first with a 10-yard touchdown pass and PAT1 with 9:30 left in the second quarter. After another stalled drive by the Coyotes, Ottawa again scored on a 30-yard passing play, but the PAT1 was no good.

Then it was the Coyotes' turn. KWU used a couple big played, including a 27-yard pass from Iwata to Jazmine Whitfield to set up Iwata's 9-yard pass to Jayla Howes for the touchdown and the Coyotes converted the PAT2 to make it 13-8 with 15 seconds left in the half.

Ottawa scored on its first drive of the second half, using a 37-yard passing play to score and the PAT1 was good with 9:42 left in the third.

The Coyotes answered right back as Iwata hit Ciaran DeCuir for a 55-yard scoring play to make it 20-14 Ottawa with 7:58 left in the third.

The Braves scored on their next possession, but the Coyotes came up empty on their next drive.

The Braves added one more score with 33 seconds left to make it 35-14.

Iwata was 20 of 32 passing for 270 yards and two scores. She added 29 yards rushing on five attempts. DeCuir had three catches for 100 yards. Ja'Daa Wilson added six for 74, and Whifield had five for 59.

Alexa Mansur led Wesleyan's defense with seven flag pulls.
