Baseball tops Spires 16-1 to open series

Kansas Wesleyan Baseball hit six homeruns on Saturday on the way to a 16-1 run-rule victory topping the University of Saint Mary Spires at Dean Evans Stadium.

The Coyotes posted their 16th straight win with the victory improving to 27-7 on the season and 19-4 in the KCAC. Saint Mary dropped its fifth straight, falling to 16-19 overall and 10-13 in the KCAC.

Wesleyan got the party started in the bottom of the first as Kendall Foster hit a homer to center field to put the Coyotes up. The Coyotes looked to add more runs in the frame as Jarrett Gable followed with a single and Tyler Favretto doubled, but KWU could only push the one across in the frame.

Eric Romero's double to start the second inning for the Coyotes sparked an explosive 7-run inning as KWU blew the game open. Romero scored on Alex Garcia's double off the wall in left and Jacob Williamson followed with an RBI single to left. After Foster walked, Gable launched a 3-run homer into the stratosphere, over the scoreboard. Two batters later Favretto hit a homer to center. Reece Bishop followed with a single and Romero doubled for the second time in the inning top score Bishop making it 8-0.

Saint Mary would briefly threaten in the top of the third as the Spires got a runner on with a hit Aidan Hartig, but on another hit by Daniel Martinez Hartig would be thrown out by three steps at third base thanks to a pin point throw back from right field by Williamson that would end the inning.

The Coyotes took advantage of an error on a dropped foul ball in the bottom of the inning to add three more runs. Cruz Oxford would double after his at bat was kept alive by the error, driving in Foster who had walked earlier in the inning. Favretto then followed with a 2-run homer to make it 11-0 after three.

Two more came across in the fourth on a 2-run homer by Adrian Villalobos.

Saint Mary got on the board on Hartig's solo homer in the fifth.

Wesleyan kept the line moving in the bottom of the fifth scoring three more. Favretto walked and Romero was hit by a pitch putting two runners on for Villalobos who again launched a ball out to left to make it 16-1.

Saint Mary loaded the bases in the fifth with three hits, but Wesleyan starter Jarrett Brannen got a strike out and a pop out to second base to end the inning with no runs scoring.

Villalobos drove in five runs while Gable and Favretto drove in three each. Favretto led the Coyotes with three hits while four others had two each.

Brannen was again masterful on the mound for the Coyotes, improving to 7-1 on the season with the win, going six innings, scattering eight hits and a run, while striking out six. Danny Ramirez pitched the seventh with a walk and two strikeouts.

The teams will meet again on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at The Dean.
